Cheap week in Roatan

Hi,
I'm about to leave for Roatan for a 2 month SCUBA course. But first I'm going to have a week there on my own. I've never been there before. I have 2 questions:

a. Will I be able to get around on a bicycle? What I really mean is are there plenty of roads with hard surfaces or are they mostly sandy? I read there is just one main paved road through the island. Side question: Will I be able to buy a bike on the island or should I bring my own?

b. Would anybody like to recommend a cheap hostel to stay at? I'll just be snorkeling for this week, not diving.

Caf, be carefull cycling on the road over there! The driving, according to our standards is... well lets just say... Interesting!!!!! Their idea of a safe distance when passing, turning, etc... is microscopic!!!! But if you are staying relatively put, in a place such as west end, and are just using the bike to get around locally, you'll be OK. Just be very carefull!!!

It all really depends on where you are staying for two months.

The bikes avaiable on the island are pretty poor quality, if you can bring one, I would. Make sure you have lights and a good lock! The roads are easily navigated on a bike, but as mentioned, the quality of driving is atrocious, there is no driving test and no vehicle inspections. Taxis stop in the middle of te road round blind corners and on the lips of hills causing people to have to swerve regularly. If you are staying in West End however is is nice and safe.

If you are arriving before 5pm get a cab to Coconut Tree Divers, they will hook you up with good accommodation, There are a few good options all within two minutes walk of their shop.
