With all recent conversation regarding diet and drinking and diving, I thought this article from Divernet might stimulate a little discussion. :D

I'm still trying to figure out if it's for real or not.

CHARDONNAY DIET WINS SCIENTIFIC BACKING

Good news for Xmas - the weight loss technique pioneered by UK dive girls and involving large quantities of Chardonnay, has been demonstrated to work by researchers in Germany.

Two groups of obese patients were given identical diets to follow but one group were given fruit juice to drink and other an equal quantity of white wine. Those following the white wine diet lost 20% more weight than the fruit juice drinkers.

The dive girl version of the Chardonnay diet is a weekend regime consisting of replacing a Friday night meal with Chardonnay, followed by black coffee and at least a litre of water for breakfast, Pot Noodle and a mini Mars bar for lunch with buckets of tea on the boat, and more Chardonnay in the evening.

“As long as you drink plenty of water throughout, and dive conservatively it works fine. But I wouldn’t recommend it for more than a dive weekend.” Commented the Chardonnay diet pioneer Diva Jones.

Thats interesting...however...I think i will stick with my red wine.

why??? Because more studies have shown that red wine is better for the heart than white wine is. And, personally, I find chardonnay a poor excuse for a wine. but thats just my little old taste buds....

i would rather be chunky and alive than skinny and dead!!
 
A good wine is probably a better idea than any fruit juice loaded with sugar...

I'm not a doctor, but this kind of crash diet doesn't seem to be efficient in the long run.

Fermentation causes sugar to change to alcohol. Alcohol can be used as a source of energy but is also excreted unchanged in the urine. Wine is full of "empty calories".

On the other hand, fruit juice contains copious amounts of sugar any excess of which is converted to glycogen and thence to fat (and it is also bad for your teeth.)

In fact it is more complex than this but as I am sure Arnaud knows "diet" is a four-letter word, and to be avoided.

Eat unrefined carbohydrate little and often.

Interesting. I thought wine was good because relatively low in cal, but especially because of the tannin.

Is your statement applicable to other alcoholic beverages as well?

Seriously, there seems to be a number of studies (and I hope they haven't all be commissioned by Gallo) showing the benefits of one or two drinks a day.

In France, good red wine has always been considered beneficial. The Southwestern part of the country, where duck and Bordeaux are part of an almost daily regimen, has one of the lowest heart-related disease rate in the world. And people are not fat. Something to do with the fat structure of the duck, high in unsaturated fat like olive oil, and the high tannin content of Bordeaux wine. These two seem to like each other.

Reasonable intake is key, of course.

There is a highly refined alcohol detoxication process in the body using enzymes in the liver that rid the body of most of the ill effects of drinking

I suppose the report referred by Marc could be summed up as such an alcoholic's diet is an excellent way to lose weight and to poison yourself in the process!

From a layman's point of view, sugar can easily be converted to fat while the body expends so much energy de-toxifying alcohol very liitle of its potential calorific value ends up as calories;- they are empty.

In France, cirrhosis is just another name for foie gras :wink:
