Hi everyone,

As there is always some interest on the SB Australia forum regarding diving with GWS, I thought I would post the following information as the changes will affect the number of businesses providing the shark cage diving service.

The South Australian Department of Environment & Natural Resources (DENR) has revised its policy for shark cage diving in the Neptune Islands Conservation Park near Port Lincoln - refer the following download: http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/fi...f7200fc5537/psa-gen-greatwhitesharkpolicy.pdf.

A major change in the DENR’s policy is the reduction of licensed operator numbers to a maximum of 2 businesses who will be licensed for up to 5 years.

DENR has issued documentation for an Expressions of Interest (EOI) which closes on 14 March 2012 - refer Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Great White Shark Tourism.

The EOI documentation is available for viewing at the following page, subject to one being able to meet the site’s registration requirements:
https://www.tenders.sa.gov.au/tende...ils.do?id=22071&action=display-tender-details).

The above link contains the following description - “The Department is seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified businesses who wish to apply for the opportunity to offer boat based Great White Shark related tours within the Neptune Islands Conservation Park. Licences will commence on 1 July 2012 and successful applicants will be required to commence operations no later than 6 months of being granted a licence”.

The outcome of the above is threefold. Either 2, 3 or 4 of the following 4 existing operators (listed in alphabetical order) will not be offering shark cage diving on the 1 July 2012:
  1. Adventure Bay Charters - http://adventurebaycharters.com.au/contact/
  2. Calypso Star Charters - Shark cage diving Port Lincoln with Calypso Star Charter Tours or Shark cage diving Port Lincoln with Calypso Star Charter Tours
  3. Goin' Off Safaris - http://goinoffsafaris.com.au/contact/
  4. Rodney Fox - https://www.rodneyfox.com.au/index....rentDriven=2147259961&currentContent=45204997.
Anyone planning a trip to go shark cage diving in the 2nd half of 2012 will need to take account of the uncertainty created by the change in policy.

Hi everyone,

Here is an update.

The following report states that the SA Government will allow the 3 main operators to keeping operating but with a reduced number of days - 'Shark tour operator days reduced' at Shark tour operator days reduced | adelaidenow, assessed 17/05/2012, 9.00 pm (GMT+09:30).

I am not sure what the story is with the 4th operator identified in my previous post. It may be possible that it sub-contracts to one of the main 3 operators in the same manner that Mike Ball Dive Expeditions does (refer Great White Shark Expedition | Scuba Diving Sharks Australia Liveboard).
