Just ordered my S500, but no memory yet. What is the fastest memory (I think it can only be CF type I)? Recommendations?

What I've read is that it's the write speed of the camera more than anything that determines how fast the image is captured. FWIW I just bought two 512mg CF cards at my local Costco. Price on one Sandisc standard was $41, the other a Sandisc Ultra II was $58.

I have the same camera with a high speed 1/2 gig card and a normal speed 1 gig card. You do notice a slight difference in shooting speed with the ultra card, but not much.

it shouldn't be any more than a placebo effect, until you get into the high-speed drive mode. Modern digicams have a buffer that will hold at least a couple pics as it writes to the card. I'd suspect that even a "normal" speed card can handle a picture every one to two seconds -- if your autofocus can work that quick!

There are two major factors wrt memory card speed:
- the card design (including how the manufacturers implement the card interface)
- the camera

Theres way more than most people (including me) ever need to know about this on Rob Galbraiths page (http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/index.asp) click on CF database.

Suffice to say, for non-ProSLR users, any 'half decent' memory card should be ok, but personally I'd steer clear of very cheap cards, in the same way I'd steer clear of very cheap film...
Over the last few years, CF cards have mostly got much better, and much closer together in terms of performance... having said that, the first 512Mb card I bought (to go in my Canon S1) would not record video in that camera.... the problem was repeated on another identical card... I now use a Lexar 40x 1Gb card, which is fine.

Another speed consideration is the download to PC. If you download from the camera using USB 1.1, the card speed does not matter - it will be SLOOOOW! But if you use a card reader at USB 2.0, you will appreciate the better speed of the Ultra II.

Cheers from an Oly lurker.

Another thing to consider is what is the maximum amount of memory that is addressable by your camera. Mine will only take up to 512MB. It would be ashame to dole out the cash for a card and your camera won't support it..

I use a 256MB SanDisk UltraII in my A95. It's plenty fast and I get about 100 shots on it in the highest mode. I just dodn't see any reason for a bigger card. It was just over $30 from newegg.com

FrankT: have you done any underwater work with it?

You'll probably find that 256 (100 shots) is too few for most of that, considering you want to avoid opening the housing if at all possible. A 512mb will double that and for relatively little in price increase.

Personally, I'd go for a slower, larger card than an ultra-fast smaller card in these cameras.

For camera's like the D70/20D/D2x-h/Mark II sure high speed memory can make a difference. The 20D for example takes 3.5 seconds to store a RAW image 7500mb on a Canon Card, and 1.7 seconds on a highspeed Scandisk (IOW's fast).

The S70 takes over 6 seconds to store about the same amount of data... IOW's it is NOT the card that slows things down. As the S500 is based on the same sensor, but MUCH smaller, and less feature packed vs. the S70, I'd guess your card speed will not be the issue.
