Hi All
I would like to relay a little incident which happened to me on my last dive.
I was on a boat dive and was buddied with a "very confident" newly certified OW lady from the US (she was in New Zealand on Holliday) with 1 certification dive(in a Quarry) under her belt.
We were getting ready for our first dive when I noticed that her cylinder was the wrong way round, so I decided to give her a hand with her gear. I suddenly noticed that she did'nt have any gauges on her rig so I asked her where they were , only to be told that 'she did not need them as she would monitor her air off my contents gauge'........picking myself off the deck after that answer, I politely said "even though I am by no means an expert diver we WILL still consume air at different rates" needless to say I aquired a spare set of regs and set her gear up (just as an added bonus her BCD was also faulty!!!- aquired another spare BCD).
To cut a long story short, I asked her to follow me (I have dived this spot before!) and said we would go nice and slowly...........5 minutes into the dive....she's GONE!, after a little panic attack and visions of her trapped under some rock!, I eventually found her +- 200m away on her own mission. anyway after the third disapearance I called it a day and we surfaced!!!!!!

Who in heavens name would certify a student like that!!!!

Sounds like she was "certified" at a resort (as in a resort course), with one dive under her belt.

No guage..... there is a hint....no dive! "sorry lady, but I do not feel confident in diving with you today. You do not seem to have the basic equipment in order to dive safely." Would you get into an airplane without a fuel guage?

Jeez... I agree with Del_Mo. It sounds like she got a resort certification. (Otherwise, I can't think of what might cause such blatant stupidity. Why do so many really STUPID Americans have to travel to other countries and convince whole swaths of the population that we are all stupid?) *sigh*

Uhm,,,,, because they are stupid?:05:

She sounds more certifiable than certified. Did you see a cert card ? I'm with Del Mo, sounds more like an intro diver with just one certification dive !!

Bubble Junky - LMAO! I tell everyone that I was "certifiable" long before I was certified.

I agree with Meng Tze in post #5. I would not dive with someone who was so clueless.

However, I'm still confused about the negative coments on "Resort courses." We did part of our certification while on vacation in Mexico. It was a German-run operation, and they were extraordinarily thorough (anal retentive). Not only did we do every skill until we had it down cold, but we also did all of the "elective" skills listed in the book.

Even the contorversial PADI Scuba Diver certification requires 2 open water dives. Something was definitely fishy (pun intended) with this lady.

My new tag line might become: Dive safe. Don't dive with dummies!
