I was reminded of the days before BCD's today when I saw a guy at Casino Point diving with an old style backpack and horse collar. The author of the article on Vintage Scuba was absolutely correct- diving with the backpacks was sheer pleasure. I never used a horse collar and didn't start using a BCD until 1989, 28 years after I started diving.

Now I dive with a pony which certainly hampers me (but I'd rather be safe than...). I took my pony off for one dive (< 30 ft) yesterday and felt some of that freedom again.
