I got certified in 1985 thru NASDS, lost my card and got a replacement in 1986 from SSI. Last week in Key largo I was rejected on a dive to the Spiegel Grove on Kelley Aquanuts because my SSI card is Open Water Diver and not Advanced Open Water Diver. Therefore I am only certified to 60 ft. If I remember correctly, When I took the NASDS course it was an advance level of certification.
Does anyone know whats up with this??

You might just need to provide whatever proof you have of the advanced cert to ssi and get an upgrade. whoever filled out the p-work for the ssi replacement might not have been paying attention to the cert level or just didn't ask you. either way if you can prove somehow the level of cert then there should be no problem.

In the early 80's the basic certification included "advanced". The training was longer and included all the info of todays advanced and many of the "specialty" certifications. I learned in the 70's when the courses were even harder. I was doing cave diving in its infancy. I helped map several caves in central and north Fla. It chaps my hide when people treat me like a moron because I don't have a handful of "specialty "cards ($$$$$$$) on subjects I could probably teach!

I learned in the 70s and I went on a boat that required the "advanced" card. I later took the course. It should be part of the basic certification, calling it an advanced diver course is a joke. Using it as a criteria for deeper dives makes no sense.

Didn't SSI buy out NASDS only in 1999 or so? Also my original NASDS Card isn't dated and says "qualified scuba diver". I usually show it when I go to a new boat, and not my replacement SSI card.
