If anyone can also tell me which would be better for non-diving family members while my son and I are diving.

Grand Cayman would be my choice for a family that has non divers. It's a nice island with a lot of fun things to do topside.

I'd pick Bonaire. What type of activities topside are you looking for?

Bonaire offers little more than a few small shops, restaurants, a nature park, and a donkey rescue.. The island is very peaceful and relaxing and diving is 24/7 anywhere anytime.

I haven't been to Grand Cayman but have been told by friends it is very crowded, touristy, and expensive plus your diving is limited by dive boat schedules so maybe 2 dives per day.

cayman has alot of stuuf to do topside. You just have to find them.

I've noticed that Bonaire has horseback riding available. My wife would enjoy that very much I think. I also think my other son would enjoy kayaking. Does either location offer better beaches than the other?

No beaches to speak of in Bonaire.

Kids loved the horse back riding in the ocean!

Caymans are easier to get to but are much - Much more expensive

Hello DiverDean59,

I've been to both places. And yes both are very nice. I personally prefer Grand Cayman Islan. My wife and I liked it so much that we ended up buying a time share at the Morritt's Tortuga Resort. I am not a certified diver yet but have snorkeled all my life it is my passion. Cayman Island is unique. I have not seen so much underwater color and Marine life in decades.
And yes because it is British the dollar has less value and it can be a bit more expensive than Bonaire but you must also consider that Cayman Island has the fifth largest economy in the world. This is adventageous to all visitors as crime is almost neal, zero. If you are interested in visiting Grand Cayman please see my post:

Please feel free to call me. I have plenty of pics of the Island and much to say about it. It is worth it to visit.

No really big beaches, but there is Bachelors Beach just south of town and decent beach space on Lac Bay where the windsurfing is, not to mention the (ahem) naturalist beach. Other than that there are the blowcarts, kayaking, and kitesurfing.

I can't compare to Cayman, as I have never visited it, but I love Bonaire. Going back for the third time in a little over a year in December.:D
