I completed a cavern coarse last week end. We did our dives in Blue Grotto and Paradise Springs. I better know and understand the importance of good fin kicks and buoyancy control. When you stir up the bottom you make it very hard to see what is around you.

Blue Grotto and Paradise? What agency is your cert with?

Naui based on the NSS standards.

The course was good. The book and all the material is out dated, way out dated. The dives very good and you learn the importance of good underwater communication. Day 1 included a no mask drill, used to simulate a silt out condition, where the 3 man team has to follow a line out of the cavern. Our line was run around a few large obstacles which not only tested our communication, but our nerve. Blue Grotto was our dive site for day 1. It is a place where OW certification check out dives are done, and some of those divers stirred up the bottom for us. Day 2 was at Paradise Springs, and that was nothing but a small opening on the surface that went down 100 feet. We seen first hand how fast the silt gets up from the bottom and how easy the cavern can become very dark. Here we did some lights out drill and several line drills.

Cool.. We've got some cavers up here that can put me in touch with the instructors down there (More than likely the Cave Excursions crew).. Can't wait to do it, but I want to work more on my buoyancy before I do it.. Don't want to look like a complete newbie. :D

Which book, published when? All cavern agencies have current books, and NAUI has the newest of them.

Do they go over the kicks in the cavern class? Or is that in the intro to cave? I've watched many documentaries, movies, etc, etc and tried to teach myself the frog/modified frog kick and I just look like a spaz (no offense intended) trying to do it. I've been meaning to get my cave diving buddies up here to show me, just haven't done it yet.

You learn kicks and if you have someone to teach you, then that will help. I will post the book information later today once I get back home.
