I just don't log dives
Been to the Point the last couple of weekends, so I though I’d share what’s been going on over there.

I was there last Saturday (12/7) with our own Ms. Wrinkles. She'd never been to the dive park, and we’ve been talking about going diving since she blew us all out on the So Cal gathering to go dive the Peace, :D so this was the trip.

We planned on going over on the 6:15 boat from LB. She arrives right on time at 5:15, and after a bleary drive to the landing, interspersed with some excitement (detour on the 710 – and I took us to some other berth and halfway to the bridge…I get so lost down there), we arrive with about 5 minutes to spare. After a half-awake commute to the island (saw my buddies from Malibu Divers on the boat) we arrive. There is a cab line when we get there, but nobody was moving – just sort of standing around. So we sort of New Yorked it and grabbed one. It put us quickly at the point where we dumped our stuff and fixed our thoughts on Breakfast.

To me, Breakfast in Avalon means one thing: The Pancake House. To my sore dissatisfaction, the place is closed for the winter… ;-0 Bogus. We hike over to Eat At Joes and have a mellow breakfast. We walked through empty Avalon back to the Point to suit up for dive one.

Dive one: The Glass Bottom Boat. 55’ guppy dive – a good place to get a feel for each other before hitting the Sue Jac at 90. I run her through the fineries of a DIR rig (she’d never seen one before) and we hit it. Tide was up, brainless entry. Down the rope, and we’re there. My first dives with the new Big Eyes (more like Bug Eyes) mask. No leaks, no problems. And still minty fresh. I've grown to love this new mask.

I should interject here – the girl can bring it in the water. You never know what to expect when diving with someone new, and I’m pleased to say she was competent, confident, entered quickly, stayed close and sipped her gas. Not much else a person could ask for in a first-time dive buddy! Viz was great, it was warm (61 on the bottom) and we had a blast. On the surface at the end of the dive asked me where the REAL wrecks were (thinking Yukon and Ruby E, I guess…) I reminded her this was a small place, and what you see is what you get!

After an SI, fills and the requisite Apple Juice, we were ready for dive two. the Sue Jac. By this time a west-to-east current had kicked in, blowing the kelp down and transporting the silt the roto-tillers kick up in the sandy west side of the park towards the Sue Jac. With the current, we got there in about 8 minutes! Viz was a little hazy, but the big Sheephead showed up to take a peek at us. Huge schools of Blacksmith were out there, and it was very nice. Tide quite a bit lower, so getting out wasn’t as easy…but we exited gracefully.

Lunch time – Dockside café closed for the season. No worries, we stroll over to Coney Island for some island grub. Its warmer now, the sun is peaking through and the wind had died down. She ran into some friends of hers from Aloha dive shop in the Valley – its always great to meet new divers. I’m hooking up with some of them next week (12/20) on the Peace. After a long SI, we prep for dive number three.

I can locate all of the major points of interest in the park – the 3 major wrecks, the tires, the pilings, the engine, the chain graveyard… beeline to all of them. I can never find the old swim platform on the first try! I will usually, eventually stumble onto it… So I tried to find it for us on dive three. No luck. We putter around on the west end of the park, and the viz is back. It was mellow, it was nice. We get back to the steps, and the tide is completely out - so we roll out the old-school Casino Crawl and do a little rock climbing to scramble to the steps.

We were booked to return on the 8:45 PM boat. We look at each other after dive three and we thumbed the day! 5 hours early, we grab the 3:45 boat and sleep on the way back.

It was a great day. Wrinkles, you were cold and never complained. You stayed close, and I felt safe. You were confident, fun and a great hang. We can go back any time you’d like!

It was a wonderful day. It’s always nerve racking to dive with someone new but the possibility of meeting a great dive buddy is worth it. I have been diving with a few people form the board and in all honestly they have been some of the best buddies I have had. Can’t wait to dive with others form the board and continue diving with the friends I have met from the board.

“…we’ve been talking about going diving since she blew us all out on the So Cal gathering to go dive the Peace, so this was the trip.”

Well it is true that I had to cancel going on the group trip to Catalina…but I am looking forward to getting another trip going in January. So if any one has a particular weekend that’s better than another speak up please. And now that I have some experience diving in Catalina I won’t look like a complete idiot in front of everyone by lets say walking all the way down the stairs into to the water and then putting my fins on instead of just doing it on the steps like everyone else.

Dive one: The Glass Bottom Boat. This was a nice dive as Ken said to get a feel for one another’s style. It was a bit different for me to dive with a frog kicker but by the end of the dive I got use to it. Ken is wonderful in the water. He is a great buddy who is constantly aware of his buddy’s presence. I felt in no immediate danger. LOL He was very helpful in finding me a rock to hold since I was under weighted. Thanks Ken it was a wonderful accessory to have I am sure I looked wonderful.

“On the surface at the end of the dive asked me where the REAL wrecks were (thinking Yukon and Ruby E, I guess…)”

In comparison to the other two wrecks, whether they are true wrecks or not, the wrecks in Catalina were very small and didn't have that awe power as the others did for me. They were an enjoyable dive just not what I expected when I was told we are going to see some wrecks.

“ I reminded her this was a small place, and what you see is what you get!”

Thanks for the reminder.

”She ran into some friends of hers from Aloha dive shop in the Valley – its always great to meet new divers.”

As it turns out the dive shop I frequent was there for the weekend as well, its always fun to see friends. Unfortunately I wont be going on the Peace that weekend they are going. But since your going Ken you can give me a full report as to what I have missed out on.

“get back to the steps, and the tide is completely out - so we roll out the old-school Casino Crawl and do a little rock climbing to scramble to the steps.”

I never thought I would be the rock climbing type but this may have inspired me for another sport to try.

"You were confident, fun and a great hang. We can go back any time you’d like! "

Same goes for you Ken.

I was teaching a class that weekend and think that I saw you two there. Were you set up right at the top of the stairs of doom? That was the only DIR rig that I saw there that weekend. If so, you looked like you were having fun. The viz was spectacular ... could have used Hillary's step to scale the rocks up to the stairs at low tide.

Ana hates fun. Must have been some other frog kicker.

K

We were set up right at the top of the stairs so must have been us. Unless there was another pair of DIR guy and non DIR gal divers there but i doubt it.

The viz was wonderful. It was a great first experience in Catalina. I only wish there was more sun top side. That would have been even better.

Too bad we couldnt have met... always fun to meet people form the board.

I agree i really felt like a rock climber.

Ana

PS

For all that havent met me I can assure you I love to have fun and even the frog kicker knows thats true.

Lol ... he wants to keep you all to himself Ana :-)

there was someone next to us getting a lesson on an Inspiration. Was that you?

K

No ... that was a guy getting a lesson from Renee of Scuba Luv. I was teaching a class of advanced students. I had a DUI CLX 450 drysuit and an OMS bungied wings of death BC with ss backplates on both sides of the wing. You looked at it like I had put it together wrong.

BTW - is there a right way to rig that up? :D :D

Hee hee. If I was staring, its because I never see those out there. How do you like the 450?
