Went out with the Great Escape on Saturday. We hit Isthmus Reef, Eagle Reef and Lion's Head respectively. Isthmus Reef and Eagle Reef were awesome. Viz is probably less than 10-ft, but nice weather and no current. At depth is a chilly 50-F, this is consistent throughout the three dive sites and the same for Sunday when I went out again too. But I digress. Saw big abalones but very few large sheepheads. Very strange. At Eagle Reef, I saw a bunch of fat Horned Aeolids. I've never seen so many nudies before on this side of the island. Also saw a tiny eel with about half a dozen of cleaner shrimps at a crevice at Eagle Reef.

Sunday was planned for going out to Anacapa with the Peace boat, but the Peace canceled due to bad weather, so I started calling around. Luckily the Sundiver had room for three of us, so off we went today.

Slightly cloudy and foggy but turned out nice. Both dives were made at Big Geiger.

First dive was simply spectacular. Water was practically still; except for one spot which had ripping current, but otherwise, water condition was awesome. Viz was 20-ft at best and 10-ft at worst. 54-F on the surface but dropped to 50-F at around 60-ft or so. Saw a black sea bass around 5-ft long. Some small octos, some small lobsters and a lone tiny Spanish Shawl. Saw a sea cucumber dangling off a ledge, swaying with the water movement. Pretty weird.

Second dive was bad. Current was ripping by this time so we pretty much stayed right at the anchor point and strayed to the kelps just far enough to have reference points. Strangely enough, while fooling around the laid down kelps, I detected a 3" Navanax right next to a small (1") dead kelp crab. Don't know if the Nax was doing a bit of carrion eating or what. Then a flash of color caught my eye from another kelp leaf, so I ambled over and found a Sterns Aeolid. This sucker was easily 2" long if not bigger. This is my first time seeing a Sterns Aeolid in real life, so I was quite excited by the find. We scoured the ocean floor a bit more, but got tired of fighting the current so we called it quit and terminated the dive.

Sunday's outing wasn't optimal but still fun as hell for a person who's been stuck in Idaho.

I forgot to mention that the Sunday trip off the Sundiver, Melvin with HSA was there with two disabled divers: Kelly and Darryl. Of course, it has to be a trip which I didn't bring a camera.

I've dived with Darryl before but it was the first time I met Kelly. Darryl did the first dive but opted out the second dive because of ripping current. Kelly went in the first dive and unfortunately her group descended into an area that has ripping current so she thumbed the dive. The second dive, ripping current was everywhere so she sat out of it as well.

There was a lovely young lady journalism student from USC on the boat to do a bit of reporting on HSA and disabled divers. When she posts the article, she promised to email me and other divers the link. I'll post the link here as well.

HT, I was on the Express and didn't see you get on the big boat. I'd have come over and said Hi. We were just east of you guys on your second (our third) dive. I went up current and started back swimming straight out from the rocks a good 75 yards in front of the boat, which was about 100 yards offshore. Hit the bow. Current was screamin for sure.

I came just a bit late. The Express was pulling away when I came aboard the Sundiver.

It was a damn shame because the reef was gorgeous and I was hoping to explore more of the rocky area on the second dive. But without the current, I wouldn't have hung around the anchor point and probably wouldn't get to see the Sterns Aeolid and the Navanax. So, there's always a silver lining in the dark cloud.

HT glad to hear you are getting some diving in here in California. That water temp at 50 seems like it may be to cold for my 7mm, but maybe with the 5mm hooded vest it might work.
We are planning on doing the GE for March 19.
Wish you could make the Farnsworth trip on the sand dollar.

It was cool, but to tell you the truth, it wasn't as cold as I remembered when I hit 50-F before. Probably Idaho lake diving had something to do with my resistance.:shocked2:

The omlet on the GE is as delicious as always. And yes, I do wish that I could hit Farnsworth with you guys.

Hi fnfalman, you know whats strange? The week before we were at catalina in like 53 degrees, and it felt like upper 50's. 4 dives plus a night dive all felt alot warmer than it was. wish i could go to farnsworth. i was on the raptor the week before with Ken Kollwitz CIDA, nice. I see he's going out to santa cruz yellowbanks on the 13th, with the raptor again, pretty nice dive packages.

In late January 2011, I went to Casino Point and it was 53-F at depth and I wasn't cold either.

The Raptor is a fast boat that goes to cool sites. My only dislike is that they don't have an air compressor on board. I don't like using tanks (and equipment) other than my own.
