I am planning trip for my family to the Carribean for spring break. My husband and I are experienced divers, but it will be the first dive trip for our kids, who will be 15 and 17.

We have been to Sunset House a number of times and don't mind going back, but would like to consider something different. I am looking to include as many of the following things as possilble.

  • Preferably a dive centric resort
  • 2+ boat dives each day
  • Shore diving
  • Meals provided or facilities to cook (although cooking on my vacation is never preferable, I will do it if eating every meal out paid separate is required)
  • Other things to do besides dive and lay on the beach. We are redheads!
  • A pool would be nice
I have looked at Anthony's on Roatan, but it looks like they do lots of cruise ship diving too, which could mean lots of crowds and lots of very new divers. Also looking at Little Cayman or Cayman Brac

SAFETY is a very high priority. I would like somewhere where divemasters are in the water with us. This is not necessary for shore diving.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Caribbean regional offerings with shore diving other than Grand Cayman bring these to mind:

1.) Bonaire.
2.) Curacao.
3.) St. Croix. Some info. on it.
4.) Cozumel has some in some places, mainly as an optional supplement to boat diving. Recent trip report.
5.) Cayman Brac's been getting some buzz about shore diving, though it's not known for diverse topside activities.
6.) In Roatan, CocoView Resort is the place that's strongly repetitive with on-site shore diving as part of the draw.

I may've missed some options, but I'd start with that list, since it narrows down the options to a manageable range of considerations. Have you been to any of these yet?

If I wanted boat and plenty of shore diving, diverse topside offerings, and an all-inclusive resort, I'd consider the Sunscape Curacao Resort with onsite Ocean Encounters for boat diving, and nearby is the Dive Bus organization as an option for guided shore diving. The better diving is reputedly out west, but that's going to put you farther from the civilized attractions of the Willemstad area.

St. Croix can be really good, too; I'd want to know how well it's recovered from past hurricane damage.

Here's a list of old threads I bookmarked to research Curacao:

AKR will handle 1 cruise excursion per day max and they get their own boat. If doing the 2 tank morning dives you'll never see them as they run them by the gift shop b4 shuttling back to the port

AKR is a lot more isolated than Sunset House - the nearest other things to do are their dolphin programs or a nearby gardens. Beyond that you'll need a car or a lot of people take cabs - some are vans at a pp cost - usually $10/ride.

Thier shore dive is shallow and not great. There's also a muck dive in the lagoon and they have a shallow wreck sometimes used for training.

Cocoview on the south side is similar but the shore diving is much better, both a wall and their deliberately put down wreck - the Prince Albert. Cocoview does NOT have a pool. It's also on it's own little island - all access is via their boats. Both resorts have good security in place.

I'm not sure any of the over water cabanas in either place are more than 2 bedrooms either. CCV has some house rentals connected to the resort.

Really for shore diving - Roatan is NOT it. The resort dives are private, two of the other listed shore dives are private for the properties that front them and there's almost nowhere to rent tanks.

Bonaire would have a lot of options - besides all the shore dives, most of the resorts bundle accommodations, all shore diving, some boat dives, often breakfast and the Plaza Resort is a full AI. Also many of the resorts - Buddy;s, Habitat, the Divi Flamingo, have condos on property as well as rooms. And there;s about a dozen condo properties with on-site or pre-arranged dive facilities, some ot those are Belmar, Port Bonaire, Hamlet Oasis, etc. You can even find house rentals with an affiliated dive operation that will deliver tanks for shore diving or has locations where you can pick them uo.

Not a lot do on Bonaire otherwise though, there;s some caves to see once, the Flamingos, the Donkey Farm - that's about it. Kitesurfing and Coco Beach club but those tend to be sunburn.

Curacao is a bigger version of Bonaiire with the same or better shore dive options. Lots more to do there non-dive also - shopping downtown is famous, the Aquarium, Ostrich Farm, Some historical things like old forts, etc. Enough to do downtown that there's a tour.

If you're anti-cruise - they're there also. Mostly downtown since that's where the port is. We really only saw them once when a cruise excursion dropped a bunch of snorkelers on the Tugboat dive site - it's only 17' deep. If you go out w/o the kds, there's real nightlife on Curacao, casinos etc.
Sunscape as mentioned is the AI resort with a shore dive and onsite boat operator. Lions Dive to the south another option - they're in a touristy area by the aquarium and Ocean Encounters main shop next door. Lions Dive also has larger accommodations - some with full kitchens.

with kids, I'd go to Curacao over Bonaire - much more to keep them entertained.

fyi my family owns on Cayman Brac. It's very small abd quiet. About the only non beach thing to do there is explore the caves.

they did recently mark all the shore dives - there's a thread here in the Cayman forum. I believe you rent tanks at Scuba Shack

WE did the AKR cruise ship dives one day last year and we never saw or bothered the people staying at AKR. They brought us by bus directly to dive shop, put us on our own boat, and dive our 2 dives. We did not mingle with AKR guests at all. After our 2 dives they put us back on shuttle and back to pier. We really wouldn't have known there were other divers there... seriously, we were on a separate boat from AKR guests and could not roam the grounds.

I think you would love AKR. It looks beautiful. Our only land-based trips to Roatan we stayed at Cocoview twice, but it is a dive only resort, nothing else to do, no pool, no kids allowed. Very quiet. AKR looks to have much more for the non-diving time.

FYI - the diving was excellent, boats excellent, crew excellent.
We are considering going back there, as a week guest.

You can see where the resort is located, and their reef choices.
You are also close enough to go down to West End area for beach days, shopping, if you want. Also, there are several ziplines and jungle adventures on island. Lots to do on Roatan if you are not diving.

Coconut Bay condos on GCM could be an option. 3 bdrm condos, reasonably priced, two pools. Big plus is on site shore diving to Hepps Pipeline and Wall which arguably is the best shore diving site on GCM. Right next to Macabuca and Turtle Reef. On site dive op who supplies tanks and rental equipment with shower and rinse tanks. I have two reports posted as we dove there the past two Junes. We dive as a family of four and it was perfect for us. Our "kids" are now 21 and 24 and they each had their own room which worked out well. No onsite food service but Macabuca/Cracked Conch next door and other restaurants near by.
