Caribbean drinking ages

It has been my experience that the legal drinking age in the Caribbean is just a suggestion (kind of like the drinking age in Quebec).

I've never understood why the drinking age in the US is kept so high.

It was lowered in the back to 18 or 19 in most states a while back. In the 1980's for the state I live in.

It was raised back up later though under pressure from the US Federal Government. In the US, the states requlate the drinking age, however, the Federal Goverment held the states hostage with Federal Highway Funds for those states that didn't raise the drinking age back up to 21.

I think there were some direct correlations of teenager drinking and auto-accidents.

In the US, most states allow teens to drive at 16. some at 15. I believe that many other countries require they wait until 18.

While I'm sure that at age 18 I wished the drinking age was lower, now days seeing kids driving while trying to 'text message' each other, I sure don't want to add alcohol to their situation!.
