I'm interested in hearing out about different careers available that involve diving. I'm 25, a computer programmer with a degree in music and am trying to relieve the boredom in my job by fantasizing about a possible career change. I'm not opposed to going back to school for a year or two if necessary, I just don't want to have to redo a bachelor's degree. I'm somewhat interested in underwater exploration and discovery (possibly archaeology), but I think that without any background in natural science, I would have trouble getting into a program.

Thoughts?

Would be quite a stretch without a graduate degree in anthro, but if you have other marketable skills and contact enough people...

What type of computer skills? The initial research is more than likely going to include side scan sonar, magnetometer sensing, and hydrographic survey. All this data will have to be rendered and put in a usable format…

Not a project could go by now that would not include some sort of database for tracking results…

To keep grant money coming in requires marketing and dissemination of research information, most often over the Internet…

Diving instruction and supervision…

Ship captain…

Mechanics and riggers…

There are many jobs that need to be filled to support these projects, find a way to utilize the skills you have in an environment of your choosing.

I'm also not against getting an appropriate graduate degree. The question is, do I need an undergraduate degree in a related field?

My computer skills are networking, system admin, and programming all in a variety of environments.

Hey Aaron,

Here is a link to investigate:

http://www.anthro.fsu.edu/grad/ghandbook/gdeptrequire.html

The main site has some additional information on the underwater specific aspects...
Drop me a line if you have any specific questions and if I can not answer them for you I can put you in touch with someone that can...

Aaron, look into NOAA. You might have to have a little more bio. background, but in the marine industries the gov. is where it,s at.The resurce boats for dive companies are cool jobs but they lack the cash! If you don't care about the money call Nekton cruises live aboard dive boat, but it only pays $100 aweek not a day a week for deck worker and $200 for capt. Some thing to think about. :bonk:

I'll be attending commercial dive school in April. I have a backround in prehospital emergency medicine. I'll be majoring in diver medic and hyberbaric medicine. I know it's really on the research side but just another idea I thought I'd throw out there for you.
