Well I can see this is the place to fine good information about a great destination. Wish I had found this sight before booking my room so far north of town. Now I need to rent a car to get around during my week long stay. Can anyone direct me towards a place to rent a car and not get ripped off with inflated insurance costs!
Thanks,
Fran

There is basically no way around the insurance issue. Its just the way it is. I use Smart rent a Car, since I am right next door. The CDW is 15.00 and the PDW is 10.00.
Thats $25.00 per day with a 500.00 deductable. I know its a little dicey, but I wouldnt drive without it....

Don:

If you are talking about paying $25 a day for insurance in addition to the rental charges, then why not reccommend that Sailit rely on cabs to get around the island. He does not say how far north of town he is staying but I bet it would be cheaper and safer for him to use cabs to get around.

This is the truth. I would be scared to drive on the roads of cozumel. Those cabbies and scooterers haul, even through town. You are on a road that looks like it accomidates only one car side by side and these guys do 60 through it. Scary indeed. I always stick with cabs in cozumel, and even then I hang on.

Hello everyone,

I am staying at the Melia which is located in the northern part of the island. I have no idea when the boats start out each morning. I do realize that there is no chance of having an operator pick me up so I must travel south by my own means. Taxi or rental unit. Maybe I can take a taxis from the Melia to the dock in towm I understand some operator pickup from there? I don't wantto spend more then 400.00USD for a weeks worth of travel and if I can spend 1/4 of that on taxis I will go that way.
Thanks
Fran

Hi Fran:

I just read some information on the Melia. You are staying at an all-inclusive resort about 3 miles north of town.

I think a round-trip cab ride into town everyday to get picked up somewhere by your dive operator plus a few additional trips for whatever reason are probably going to cost you a lot less than renting a car - not to mention the hassle of actually diriving and figuring out directions; the potential for a shakedown by the police; the risk of getting into an accident; etc.

I hope to dive with either Blue XT or Prestaciones Submarinas. Do either of these operators pickup in town or do I have to pay the full frieght for a taxi to the south end of the island.
Thanks,
Fran

Blue XT Sea is a great choice. My wife and I dove with them on 3 different trips and were very satisfied. Check with them but I think they will pick you up at one of the downtown piers.

this vehicle comes with liability insurance from Avis. up to $2500. Depending on what credit card you have, full coverage insurance may be provided, as it is with my american express. call your card company for details

Hey that looks like a wonderful deal. Travel by taxis seems to be 15 or 20 dollars each way to and from the Melia. So one round trip will more than cover the cost of a Chevy Pop. Plus we will have the car for the rest of the day and night. I am concerned about crazy drivers but I will just have to keep my head up and be careful.
Thanks,
Fran
