I double down on Gordon's suggestions. From the mainland is, bluntly, nuts! The other issue is a great fun part of Cozumel is in town where parking is a real problem. But making a circumnavigation on one day is equally important…taking a taxi would be a wash with a weekly rental.

But a large part of the decision is where you are going to stay? First trip—I'd skip the rental car no matter where you stay. But if you must, ISIS is clearly the best choice.

As a side note, has anybody ever rented a car on the mainland and ferried it over to Coz for your time there?
I have a friend who did this, had a good deal on a few weeks rental and wanted to bring a pile of dive gear to Cozumel with him. It was an easy and cost effective way of transporting heavy gear bags without the hassle of 3 separate car rentals and carrying tanks between them.

There would be 3 of us with a full load of gear. The car rental would be cheaper and we could use it for our last day back on the mainland and we wouldn't have to pay to get to Playa. There are some advantages. Drive off the ferry to our rental without hauling gear, etc.
