Hi,

Thinking about renting a car from the airport in Cancun to get between hotel (Riviera) & LDS (Playa). Does anyone have an experience of car renting in Cancun - good or bad (particularly good as there's lots of bad about!)? Any advice on the same?

Cheers,
A.

Easyway car rental. We've rented cars about 4 times in the RM. Used to use America but tried Easyway after reading many good reviews on locogrino.

Keep in mind the airport can be challenging. If your agent isn't there wait and watch out for the blue shirts who will ask who you are with. I told one once and guess what? He suddenly showed up! But he was from another agency. He got some choice words.

When getting gas get out of the car and watch them set the pump to zero, then make sure of the bills you give them. There is the 20 to 2 peso switcharoo scam.

If your staying in Playa, we have found it easier to cab or bus into Playa - get settled and then go to Executive on 5th Ave and then return to that location and then cab or bus back to airport - less stress :) the other good thingbeside prices and customerservice at Executive is if you plan to visit 5th Ave., like we do, than they will let you park at their location for free - very convienent and safe

Easyway has been pretty good to us, although they have a small number of cars, and it isn't unusual for them not to have the model you reserved available when you get there. Note that they no longer include insurance in the website price (they used to).

I used to rent from Hertz at the airport, and actually never had any bad experiences with them. We even got upgraded to a king cab pickup truck once, when that was all they had left . . . we used it for a week for about $250! Easyway used to be significantly less expensive, but I'm not sure how true that is now. Be VERY careful with cheap car rental places. Brakes may be optional . . .

Usually you'll find better rates if you rent a car in Playa rather than in the airport. We work with a local car rental agency that gives our divers really good rates..

Yesterday I "reserved" a car with Easyway for pick up at the Cancun airport upon arrival. Today however I got a request for my drivers license information to "confirm" the reservation. It's my first time renting from Easyway and I'm a bit uneasy about emailing them the info. My wife was a victim of identity theft and it was a nightmare clearing it up. For those of you who have used them in the past, is this the common practice and did you have any issues?

BTW, I haven't had to give them any creditcard info.

Thanks,

PH

I don't know why they request such in advance, but it is a different country. They're going to get all that info anyway, with any car rental, so what's to lose...?

Probably nothing. But in person, I know the proper person in obtaining it and I get copies of everything. Don, you mentioned that you've used them in the past. Did they request the same from you in advance?
