I will be staying one week in st thomas and one week in st john just wondering if a car is really needed. I understand taxis here are really expensive or is a bus an option.

St Thomas and St John are both in the USVI, but taxis are quite expensive over there, so if you are going to be travelling around I would either rent a car, or go on the "dollar bus" (which, misleadingly, is actually two dollars).

In BVI, taxis are even more expensive, and we have no public transport system at all.

Thanx. Does the dollar bus get around the island and is it easy.

It is a pretty regular service - it doesn't stop everywhere, but it stops most major places. The one thing is I probably wouldn't want to be catching it late at night.

St. Thomas Island Guide: Transportation should tell you about the Public bus service and the Dollar Taxis.

Depending on where you are staying and where you are diving from the bus and/or dollar taxis could be a big savings.

"The public bus system is not very reliable so is not recommended for people on a tight or limited time schedule. "

If you are going to be doing any traveling around the island more than the bare minimum it would probably pay to rent a car.

The $1 taxis have very set routes so depending on where you're staying, it might not even be an option for you. Taxis are really expensive so if you plan on getting out and doing stuff, a rental car might be the ticket.

In case you didn't know, we drive on the left and the roads are poorly marked if that makes you lean one way or the other. We also drive like crazy people.

We will be staying at the sapphire in st thomas and maho bay camp in st john. I don't mind driving on the left. Thank you for your help. Also why is there a warning on being out a night.

I don't think that there is a specific problem staying out late at night generally (certainly not in St John), but like any public transport system, the weirdos come out at night.

I used to stay at the Sapphire a lot when I went across to St T (it's nice) but haven't stayed there for years now (because I haven't overnighted in St T for ages), but it was being rennovated last time I saw it. I have never stayed at Mahoe Bay, but I have heard it can be a bit buggy, so remember to get a can of "Off" or other bug spray just in case.

Sapphire is on the $1 taxi route between Red Hook and Tutu (which also continues to Havensight) so you should be able to use that as an option.
