I just learned from Jon Council that Catalina diving pioneer Cap Perkins passed away Monday. Cap began his career diving a closed circuit rebreather with the Navy during WWII. In 1954 he, Parry Bivens and John Samazan set the men's deep diving record at 350 ft using a gas mix concocted by Bivens.
Also in 1954 Cap was one of the safety divers when Zale Parry set the women's deep diving record of 209 ft off Catalina. He and Zale had a mini reunion last spring when she came out to dive Casino Point.
Much later in 1969 or 1970 Cap and I were after the same girl... the music teacher in Avalon. He won and married her. I've been single ever since.
Jon will be writing an obituary for Cap and I'll try to link to it here.
