I am in the process of selecting a new camera. I had two olympus cameras in the past and both flooded. I also have a very cheap canon camera and I never had a problem with it. I want to know what do you think, which brand do you prefer and why, and which housings do you prefer and why. I am looking into the A720 from canon or SP-550UZ from olympus for my next camera. Any advise/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

divefreak2,

Here are 2 links to threads on just this subject. And Alcina's link has a wealth of other information to help with getting started with digital photography.

Good luck with your search. And you can see some of pictures I took with my A720IS camera by going to You can see some of pictures I took with my camera by going to

and selecting the Sipadan 2007 Underwater folder. Good luck with you search.

I'll chime in. I've had three Olympus cameras and liked them a great deal, but my last two (8080 and sp-350) had that problem with the mode dial that locked them up 'til the battery was removed. I've made the switch to Canon and so far no problems.

I wouldn't hesitate to go with an Olympus that had a different setup for changing modes, I'm kinda jaded on that dial. There's a thread "good news from Canon" or something like that in this or the Canon forum that makes it sound as though Canon really takes care of issues if any pop up.

Thank you very much for all you input. I think I am leaning towards canon after all the stuff read and personl experience.
