In the back of my mind is "what will my next camera upgrade be?" Currently I've got a G10 in the Canon housing with an Inon D-2000 strobe.

Are there any housings that allow one to optically trigger a strobe like my Inon for the Canon DSLRs? Or am I out of luck (meaning replace or at least supplement the strobe with a Z-240)?

Don't forget to look at the Evils -- in particular the Oly E-PL1 with the Oly housing which is specifically designed for optical firing (and I use my D-2000). This system is a very nice upgrade from the G or S series and has most of the benefits of a full dSLR at a much better price point.

Yeah, my actual hope is that by the time I get around to doing anything about this, Canon will have a nice EVIL setup. But those Nauticam setups looked pretty form-fitting and I'm already a Canon SLR shooter, so that's more attractive than I initially thought it would be.

Nauticam, Aquatica, Sea&Sea all support optical. I use them all the time with my 7D in a Nauticam

All of our housings support fiber. I often shoot Canon T2i with a couple of Z-240's via fiber. It's a compact setup for DSLR. I did a blog post a few months ago about how serious of a DSLR setup I could fit into a bag:
Underwater DSLR Rig in a box. Or a bag. Nauticam USA

Another option, though not a Canon, is the Sony NEX-5. Same size sensor as in most DSLR's in a housing size that is very similar to your G10.

Cp

Thanks. Yeah, the T2i looks great. I shoot a 40D above water, but buying a smaller housing and dedicated body has all kinds of appeal.

I think Backscatter has a great discussion of the T2i and your housing (and your competitors').

Lots to think about. :D Unfortunately at the moment it's all thinking and no doing. :D

I really like the T2i. I mostly shoot 7D but occasionally will shoot T2i. I like the small size on land. Image/video quality with T2i is very good. And at only $800, it's easy to buy a second body to have as a spare.

Backscatter's report on T2i was well done, a good read, and I agree with their overall conclusion that it really is a compelling choice. I think they spent a little to much time on the competition and not enough on Nauticam, but I am a bit biased I suppose. One example - they mention how you have to pull out one of the controls to insert the camera into the housing, and how easily it slips in when you do that - and make it sound like a great feature... but they fail to mention that you can slide the camera into the Nauticam housing without having to do anything of the sort - just slide it in. But I'm not bitter... lol, really.

Cheers,
Chris
