Hello there,
I had my first trip (to magni
ficent Atmosphere Resort, Dumaguete in the Phiippines) with the new Canon S95...lovely camera with some great features, though I was disappointed to find 1/2 teaspoon in my Canon housing on dive no. 9 (which was enought to write the camera off for the rest of the trip). But the first day's diving was also largely wasted due to a synch issue problem I wish to share.
I have an Inon d180 strobe and typically use any underwater camera on full Manual (with the strobe on auto set to match the desired aperture.) Dive 1 and I noticed I was getting a mere puff of light...just a speck really...It was synching but the strobe fire was so weak the recharge light didn't even extinguish. I tried the strobe on manual, and the same applied. The strobe was about as bright as a firefly in a jar.
Steve de Neef (photo pro at Atmosphere and a brilliant resource) solved the mystery pretty quickly. All I was getting was the 'pre-flash). He switched it over to Av, and 'blam' - full force and I was back in business. So I guess I either need to insert the little magnet synch switcher (long lost but abvailable from Sea Optics) in order to shootin Manual....or shoot in Av mode all the time. A bit if a bind though, in that I will be unable to switch between shooting modes underwater. I did get good results shooting in AV mode with about a 2 stop under-exposure compensation set, but would generally prefer to go with full manual.
So, anyone else with an Inon strobe experience this issue???
