Well, I finally have the S80, Ikelite housing and Inon strobe. I've been trying to play with the camera in the housing and have not been able to get the Ike to move the jog dial with any accuracy for setting values in manual. I thought I read somewhere that the S80 in the Canon housing does not have a button on the housing to move the circular jog dial so I'm looking for that work around in case I need to use it with my Ike. Can anyone point me to it?

Thanks.

Sandra

the Ike housing can control that dial - there is a "button" with a sort of lever attached to rotate it.

Thanks Alcina and Stu. That's what I was looking for. Stu..... I have tried and tried to get the lever to move the control dial but it keeps turning the flash on and off. I'm trying to follow the directions in the Ike book by placing the white dot on the knob in the right place so it will access the contol dial (and not the flash) but it's not easy to move the dial with that knob. I think until I get the hang of it, I'll try the work around, and keep practicing with the Ike knob until I get it figured out.

Thanks. Sandra

do you have one that looks like a lever (the bit that touches the dial - a bit like the "on" button/lever)...or one that is circular (i.e. more like the one that looks like the mode selection button)...if the latter, you will have problems as the water pressure constantly pushes down on it - Ike came out with a fix - and will send you the one that looks more like the "on" button if you tell them.

The newer button still isn't perfect - as you rotate the dial it does sometimes turn the flash on/off ...but it is ok with practice (and 100% better than the previous version !)..worse case you just get the appeture or shutter speed to what you want then if the flash has turned off just hit the flash button on again..

Well, I'd post a pic but don't have a host site for it. On the inside of the Ike back, the lever that touches the camera back is shapped like a lazy "L" with a rubber foot. On the outside of the Ike back, there's a knob with a white dot on it. The knob looks like the zoom knob on the back of the housing and the on/off knob on the front of the housing. I assume this is the "newer button" you refer to above. As attempts are made to rotate the dial on the camera, the flash is turned on and off and there's no positive control for adjusting the appeture or shutter speed. I'm surprised it's so difficult. I'll practice....

yes, thats the newer button (and believe it or not it IS a huge improvement over the previous one !)...really you just have to position the foot at the higest point on the dial it touches and then move it down to the lowest (or vice versa) and repeat as necessary - enabling you to change shutter or appeture settings depending on your mde...after you ge tthose correct then see if you flash is now off - if so just press it down once (then move the white dot so the lever is no longer touching the dial).....

....needless to say, as this takes a little time, set the camera up for your shot beefore sneaking up on the fish !

Its interesting, because this was one of the reasons why my wife got rid over her S80 and went with the SP-350.. With Canon's housing, it is a two handed operation to change the aperture and shutter speeds and you have to select between which one you are going to change so it is a lot of effort whereas the SP-350 uses the arrow keys to adjust the shutter and aperture easily with one hand..

Hey Rich.... I think it might be a 2 handed operation with the Ikelite housing as well. The circular dial on the camera itself is very easy to use. Put the camera in the Ikelite and it's a different story. All the other buttons and dials on the Ike work fine - as long as you have small fingers and don't wear gloves. A person with large fingers or someone wearing gloves would be SOL trying to use the Ike housing with this camera in it. The buttons are very close together and then there's this circular dial access problem.

I had a Sony camera which I used in an Ike housing and the buttons were easily used and well spaced so that anyone could use the camera in the housing. All the buttons and dials were simple and accurate once you pushed or turned them.

I love the S80 camera but the Ike housing for it... that's another story.

Sandra,

Well on Canon's housing, you had to push the upper left hand button down (can't remember what it was called on the cammera but it is the button on the upper left hand when you look at the back of the camera) and then while holding it down, you could use the directional buttons on the back of the wheel to increment and decrement the shutter/aperture settings.

Like I said.. two handed and does work, but is a real pain. :(
