Anyone has any good recommendations for Strobes that are used not for diving but very shallow reefs only and some fish.. not even certified diver yet.. but plan to do so. I like the Inon D2000, Ikelites, etc but want something much cheaper if there is one... will not be diving over 20 feet for sure. I have the S70 and Underwater enclosure.

See my post in this section about the Sealife SL960D. The price is just under $300 for the whole kit, flash, arm, tray and fiber cable.

Can you really swimm down to 20 feet and then have enough
time to frame, compose and focus a shot? I'm impressed.
At that depth I have just seconds
But scuba makes it easy, gives you time to wait and take
another shotand an other.... Make some camera adjustments and try again

You say you plan to become a certified diver so then I assume you would be going deeper then 20 feet. But as it turns out if a unit is sealed up so that it can go to 20 feet it will likely go to 150. That's just the way they make them. I don't know of a strobe that is rated to only 20ft.

Some people have put a land type digital slave strobe inside a Pelican "micro case". These cases have clear lids and are waterproof to a few feet. Test an empty case first. But it makes for a cheap strobe. The case is about $20 and the digital slave strobe is about $50.

For $170 I have not found a flash that would seem to deliver more benifits for under $400. I don't have first hand experience with this unit, but Sunpak is a much more recognized name in the flash industry than any other dive flash manufacture.

The guide number exceeds any other flash in the under $400 range, it is rated to 147', it uses no wires (slave only which *might* be a downfall, but unlikely, and potentially a benifit). It has a slow recycle time of 7 seconds maybe a bit better with strong batteries, like 2300) but to get a much improved recycle time one has to spend in the $500 range.

Seems hard to beat for the price even if it does not appear very popular on this board.

Thanks again everyone. Yes I definitely would like even the $1000s ones but would like to go slow initially and test things out first before going deeper into this hobby which I am sure I would. I will take alook into Sunpak. I saw them but seems that none are available now.
