I am brand new to underwater photography. I recently bought a dc300 case for an old Canon s45 that I don't really use anymore. I have had limited success with this set up. I am considering adding an external strobe or starting from scratch with a Sealife DC 600 Maxx or similar point and shoot that was designed for underwater use. I am just looking for feedback to see if I am better off with the Sealife or adding a stobe to my existing camera?

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'd say look at two options:

1) add the strobe. If you buy wisely you can take the strobe with you when you do change. Your camera has several limitations that I would find frustrating underwater, but it is capable of good shots.

2) buy a new system. Personally, the SeaLife wouldn't make my list. I'd head for another Canon - something in the A series line probably. There are many models and you likely can find something in your budget. I love the Canon A series as they are simple, easy to use, fast to learn, produce great results as-is, readily accept strobes, small and easy to find. There are other brands with good options out there, too.

If you haven't, follow the Pink Link in my signature to the Sticky in the main UW Photo area - inside it you will find tons of information to help you get started with your shopping needs! Once you've had a look you'll have a better idea of the possibilities and a better idea of the specific questions that you may still need to ask.

I say stick with the S45 for the moment.
Buy a strobe.
I have the S70. Took a while before i got some nice results. A strobe does make a big difference.
If the S45 has RAW & 28mm stick with it until Canon release the S90!!! Most of the new P&S on the market do not have 28mm & RAW, so by upgrading you will loose some of the good points on your current set up.

Not sure about the S45 but the S70 has poor macro.

I agree with Kevster,

Stick to the S45. I had the S40 added an Inon D2000 strobe, ultralight tray and arms an managed to take great pics. I've since upgraded to the S70 and continue to get great results. The Inon Wide angle and macro lenses really extend the camera for a wider variety of shots.
