Hey all....

I am wondering if anyone has a Canon S1 and strobe setup yet??? I am a amateur photographer and dont know much about strobes as what I all need to get mine setup.....I was hoping someone can give me some insight as to what to get and what basics I would need to get my rig together......I love the camera and going to Bonaire in 2 weeks and was hoping to get better pictures instead of using the onboard flash......Anyone got anything already set up???? Let me know where to get it as well please...

I would suggest the Inon strobes - D180.
Yuzo in japan (uwdigitalcamera.com) is great, he will set you up with everything you need.

Why specifically the Inon? I will be looking into a strobe in future and will probably choose between the YS-90 and the D180, but other than price I'm not sure theres a hellova lot of difference....

The YS90 does not have a focus light, this is a handy feature for most - helps with aiming and night dives.
The D180 is significatly smaller.
D180 provides a circular flash (100 degrees) the YS90 is similar (105 X 95 degs).
The recycle time of the D180 is about 2 secs whereas the YS90 is about 4 secs (reading from specs with NiMH batteries).

YS90 has a higher guide number so will put out slighly more light. For digicams the light requirements are nowhere near film as the CCDs are more sensitive so this to me is a non-issue.

I also seems that the D180 can be had for slightly less - I think it is a better deal.

Thanks. Looking at the costs from Yuzo, I have worked out that it is slightly more expensive to get the Inon because you need to include the price of the M67 mount base (to which the optic kit attaches). Then again I'd rather have that than the permanently glued velcro patch that S&S uses. Also this base can be used for the WA lenses.

The other problem is the mount base screws up the tray design I am working on....

You don't need the mount base. Make you own if you are already making a base. It would be really simple. I got the mount base because I wanted the add-on lenses but you could easily just make a black plastic 'diffuser' to make sure the internal flash has no effect. Then just make a little attachment to place the end of the optic fibre cable where it can 'see' the internal flash. Problem solved and no mount base needed.

I think I have settled on the Inon D180 - the wife has given me the go-ahead to spend some dosh on myself. I will be getting the mount base as I want to get the WA lens as well.

I see you use the ULCS arms, so what tray are you using? If not the Inon DIII then how does it attach to the mount base? Finally, why are ULCS arms better than the Inon?

Thanks

I am using the DII arm/tray. But yes you cam is bigger so I would get the DIII. This arm/tray is cheap light and obviously fits with the mount base. I am pretty sure te ULCS base does as well but it was quite a bit more expensive.

I have the Inon Z adaptor for the strobe which you will need to use this style of arms. This part has much more wear than any of the ULCS parts that I have. Because there was not a great price difference I considered the ULCS more robust. I wouldn't be totally turn off the Inon but this is just my experience.

Thanks for the advice - when i get round to ordering the stuff I'll have a good chat to Yuzo. BTW, do you attach the camera to your BCD at all? If so how?
