Anyone out there have an idea on best settings for a Canon Powershot S50 for underwater shots? I keep getting blurrred images, but sometimes it's surgy out here in Cali. Some basic setting help would be greatly appreciated.

I dive in surgy, limited visibility Cook Strait with an s50 usually using flash and shooting macro. My default setting is often shutter speed 1/60th and let the camera choose aperture - often it is shooting at F3.2 to 3.5. The 1/60th is gnerally fast enough for most action and reasonable protection against camera shake.

Your blurring could also be due to trying to focus closer than the lens will allow (use macro setting and believe the focus light according to the manual s50 won't focus in macro closer than 10cm on wideangle or 30cm on full tele).

Good luck

I just use the auto setting. Blurriness seems to me to be more a problem of the diver keeping the camera steady than of animals moving.

Oh, and if you get too close, push the tulip (macro) button, like alison said.

Try the P setting, flash off, auto iso, and custom white balance (use a white slate or shot-blast aluminum cylinder to set the white balance). If you need artificial illumination, select the macro function, turn the flash on, set the white balance to auto, and get within two feet (but no closer than four inches) of your subject. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the detailed info, I'll let you know how it works out!
