I dont want to spend a ton as I wont get much use out of it before it will be time for an upgrade.

Well, that's one way to go. The other way to go is to get a GOOD strobe right away that will move over if you get another camera. That's the way I went.

The photos from Cozumel I posted were all with the G12 in an Ikelite housing and a DS-161 strobe. Clearly not an inexpensive strobe but I can change out the housing and camera for a DSLR rig and use exactly the same strobe. The DS-161 also has a built in focus light/video light. I use it as my primary dive light at night now.

frankrom,

I use a G12, with Canon housing, and Inon D2000 strobe - and think the biggest problem with my photography is my own eyesight and lack of time to play with editing programsm, as for a "black spot" - no, never, as long as you have diffuser on the housing !

For sure on G11 and G12, I found the 'built in' flash was too weak 90 % of the time, so added an Inon strobe and not looked back, I think now 'over exposure' is main problem for many of my pics.

Have a look here - http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/ph...270-anilao-trip-sep-9-13-some-words-pics.html - pics of mine last week, some a little over exposed as I had just put a diffuser on the strobe and was playing around with settings, but I like some results.

Have a search through "Gilligan" posts in Canon and Philippine forums - some quite breathtaking photos.

Cheers
