Cardog - I see what you were getting at... Again I am new so sorry if I am not picking up on this stuff to quick... you guys are being very helpful though.

This brings me to my next question. Strobes are not dependant on the housing right? I should be able to use any strobe with any housing? Also you made mention to a tray and arm... I notice that with this ikelite housing... it has a spot to put the strobe on the housing... where as the housing I have which is the canon one... just encloses your camera doesn't have a spot for the strobe.
The Ike does come with the tray and arm. If you go this route you will want to get the Ike DS strobe so that you can get ttl with your strobe.

Oh I forgot ... I wanted to add... I would also like the ability to do video as well... not just photos... can id o that with the The Sea & Sea YS-01 and YS-02, and the Inon S 2000 ??

something like this I guess?
Amazon.com: Sea and Sea YS-02 Strobe w/ Grip Stay-S: Sports & Outdoors
The strobes are just for taking pics. If you stick with the Canon housing and you buy a strobe you might want to check out Reef Photo for a slick way to mount an attachment that will secure your fiber optic cable to the housing.....

These are a few shots I took with my g11 and the WP DC 34 housing last week.

All shot in Manual using the onboard flash. I've yet to experience this so-called shadow problem.

Good reading, and thanks. I have a G12 with Ike housing and no strobe yet.
We're still playing with it. I have to tell you, taking underwater pictures isn't as easy as one might first think.

oh my god my head is going to explode after talking with IKOLITE and ikolite suppliers...

Anyone here from the Toronto area?

i have G9 with canon case and just bought used Ikelite AF-35. which Im very happy with. the AF-35 is a kit thats made for point and shooters.. but no light for video. its just strobe

.... please help!

Thanks guys! :coffee:

Well i tried it the "cheap" way, Canon g12 with WP-DC34 housing, no external flash.
As i said, i got some problems with litttle drops inside, when using some of the buttons (small drops - not flodding)
and malfunction on the deeper dives.
Have a look at the shots of that combination:

Another selection from that album in higher resolution - enjoy :)

psssssst next journey starting on Oct. 28. :crafty:

Its right, the super small stuff is almost impossible to shot well, compared with an external strobe, also larger scenery with internal flash does not look that good.

The strobes are just for taking pics.

This is not entirely true. Some strobes have a focus light ability that is actually not too bad. I shot this short clip in Bonaire on (obviously) a night dive where it was very dark. This is with a Nikon P5000 P&S in Ike housing with DS125 strobe and only using the strobe focus light.

The video is far from bright and colorful but for someone who is primarily shooting stills and will periodically want to shoot video, then I believe it is enough. Most dives are done when it is light out anyway so the dark as night conditions like this are not the norm for most people meaning the focus light would be fine. If all you shoot is video then I recommend getting something more suitable for shooting video.
