I just bought the Canon SD450 but then realized that canon doesn't make an underwater casing that can go deep enough for it. I am thinking of upgrading to the SD550.

Is there anything I show about this camera? I have seen the casing online but not in person. Is this a good camera for underwater photography?

I bought one and the underwater housing for it too, but primarily as a land camera because ... it has no manual shutter controls, you would do much better to get a model that has them, if your going to do anything more than just occasional shooting UW ... that said, I can't believe the pic's mine takes out of the water
Make sure you get a large storage card so you don't have to open the housing after every dive or so, to change it (I have a 2Gb Hi Speed SD card for mine, holds 660 - 7.1Mp pic's with everything at maxed settings)

I would recommend the S80 over this model, however it's not as small. The major reasons for the S80 over this camera is lack of manual control, and a not so wide 37mm lens.

Ths S80 is hands down a better camera for all shooting, not just UW, and it's only a few $$$ more. Dell has the S80 for $399, and I'm betting you can find them for even less.

When my S50 dies, I'm upgrading to a later model. Love these cameras.

I don't disagree with what the others are saying, but I will say that you can take some pretty good u/w shots with the SD550. I am definitely a rank amateur, and I've done what I feel is some pretty decent work with my camera, and I've only had it on 3 trips, total! Obviously I'm still learning a great deal... enough that I'm definitely finding some lack of features to be disappointing, but I just wanted to say the SD550 is a GREAT little camera, and you can take some really good shots with it. I'm less happy with the canon housing... it's certainly doing it's job keeping the camera dry, but it makes it tough to expand your setup (strobes, handles, lenses, etc.). I wish I had one from Ikelite or the other big housing vendors, because they tend to have more options than the Canon housings, which keep your camera dry, let you push the buttons, and that's it.

Pix taken with my SD550 (only 2 of my 3 trips are up here, but you can see the difference in shot quality between the two trips as it is): http://www.kalani.net/scuba/

I concur with Compudude.... I have a sd550 and love it. See my gallery for some of my shots. I have only used it on two trips and cannot wait to get in the water with it soon.
Nice reef shots... how did you get all that color? I'm guessing you must have been in very shallow water, because most of those don't look like a strobe or flash was used, yet the lighting is very even all across the scene.

If those were lit with a flash or strobe, I'd love to know your secret!

av8er23:
The depth for the reef shots werer 15-25'
I do not have a strobe. PM me for my secret....

What, is it CLASSIFIED?!
