Hi All,

Does anyone have the Canon CP-220 (or the 300 or the 200) photo printer that connects directly to the camera and prints 4x6 pics? If so, do you like it? I'm thinking about getting one. I don't want to print tons of pics on it but it would be great to have on vacations to be able to print a couple of pics right after the dives to show people or give people. Any reviews would be great!

Speaking for myself having seen how useful basic editing is for underwater shots I would not buy a printer that prints direct from the camera..

I've used a similiar HP printer. About 150.00. You put the memory card in and the printer has a little screen to preview the photos. Nice small unit, worked very well. I would guess that the Canon would be good quality too.

There is an issue with the ink cartridges and traveling. You are not supposed to "ship" inkjets with the cartridges in. They can leak. So, to do it properly you would need to bring a new set of cartridges with you, use them on your trip, then discard them (even if they were still pretty full) before you packed up. May or may not be worth it. Probably easier to get a CD burner and just burn some photos for people :)

Had a friend here last weekend with the 200. Loved it , started doing the research, looks like the 220 will print 4x8 and the max on the 200 is 4x6. The paper loads with the ink. So, the 200 might be simpler (1 tray ) also the 220 includes a 12 volt plug and the 300 will work off of batteries. So $85, $125, $200, all print the same. All will print off a computer, after edit. I have no need to print off the camera. I think that I might go 200.

I know someone with the 200. They are not inkjets, they are dye sublimation printers. I.e the ink starts off solid, so there is not much issue with moving it around. You can do basic editing with the camera (crop, rotate etc)
The problem I have with them is finding the ink cartridges, there are hardly any shops here (Singapore) that still stock them.

Yep, you buy the ink/paper as a package and it is good for about 35 pics. On the internet the prices for the pkg run from about $35 to $17. I guess that I would look for someone with "free shipping" and buy bulk.

It may be a good idea for topside photos but I've seen very few UW shots straight from the camera that didn't need some editing and tweaking. If blue snapshots is what you'd be pleased with, go for it.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks so much for all of the replies!!! Still haven't made up my mind if I will purchase the CP-220 but your replies have really helped!

I have the CP-200. Ditto what everyone else has said. Even though you can print direct from the camera I tend to bring my notebook with me on my travels. I agree to others above in regards to the color balance. You almost always need to color correct to some degree to get decent photos. So color correcting then printing from the notebook is better.

Part of the problem here is the 3 color process dye-sub ribbons. Blacks are composite blacks and you don't get quite the range of the 8 color + ink jets.

Lastly, some top side photos that looked pretty good in the viewfinder didn't print so hot...again, due to 3 color process I think.

That said, I'm happy with it. You need to understand the limitations but they can be overcome.

Enjoy.
