I have been told that it is important to only use Canon o-ring grease with Canon housings. Is this true or is it just a marketting ploy?

It is not a marketing ploy, more like good advice for the average consumer as not everyone is capable of identifying a suitable replacement silicone grease..they vary quite some in consistency.

Good business practice indicates Canon should recommend something they know to work. They would be nuts to say "Its all the same stuff so use any old partially to mostly solid silicone grease from anywhere"..

me?.. i have other silicone grease i will use once the little tube runs out..and if the o-ring rots and my camera floods i will eat my laptop...lol

I have been using Silicone Grease (O ring lubricant) and it has worked for mine.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now that my housing has actually arrived I can quote from the instructions:
Use only the supplied silicone grease. Use of other waterproofing products may impair the strength of the waterproof case. If any other waterproofing product is mistakenly applied, wipe it off immediately.

That leaves me a bit concerned about using other products, but it is hard to imagine that other brands of silicone could actually damage the housing. For now I will play it safe and see if I can find a supplier for the Canon silicone so I can have a spare handy.
