I'm planning to take my wifie's IXUS 800IS (aka PowerShot SD 700IS) to the blues -of course giving off a brand new G7 in place! :shakehead:

anyway has anybody tested a one (IXUS 800IS)? which housing? canon or ikelite? will a strobe be needed or internal flash is enough?

so, nobody has ever used it ??

I prefer the Canon housings for the SD range.

With the SD range you don't have manual control of your aperture and shutter so your shooting will be limited. If this model has manual white balance - learn how to set it and turn off the internal flash.

When using the internal flash, make sure you are close enough (3-4 feet) for it to be effective. Remember you can turn your camera upside down to direct more light into the bottom/reef than into the blue and this can help reduce the amount of backscatter.

Know your minimum focus distance and shoot from there whenever possible. Don't get too close or the camera won't be able to focus.

External strobes are great! Get one if you can afford it and know that you are going to be able to take it with you to a new system.

Check out the Sticky at the top of the UW Photo area for more ideas to help you get started. The vast majority of shooting is not camera specific so you don't need to look only for those tips related to your own camera model. You can also get to the Sticky via the Pink Link in my signature.

Also, do a search of the Canon area for SD and Ixus - there are quite a few users and that should help you get started, too.

Have fun! Post photos!
