Hi,

I would like some advice on a housing and strobe combination for my HFS-21.

I am sure there are some decent ones other than Ikelite and Gates.

Lights is the topic that gets me as I have no idea what is the norm.

Thanks in advance

Brendan

Brendan, you can spend big $$$$ on an underwater video rig, or you can go more budget. It all depends what you want and need.

1. Look at where you will be using it - water color, visibility, etc. Also, decide if you are using it at night or inside wrecks (needing lights) or just daylight.
2. Look at how often you will be using it - personally, I only go on a few big dive trips a year so I cannot justify spending big bucks on my ssytem, YMMV.
3. If you have already bought the camcorder, then do a search on places like B&H photo video to see what housings are available.

Hope this helps getting you started.

Those 2 and Equinox are the mechanical options. Equinox Underwater Video Housings

Light & Motion supports it in both Bluefin and Stingray models afaik. They're pretty decent. :D LIGHT & MOTION

I think there's an Aditech Mangrove that will also. Shop - Housings for CANON - Aditech | Underwater video and photo online store

I maintain a pretty complete manufacturer's list here if you want to check for others. http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/un...using-manufacturers-list-updated-08-10-a.html

Thanks for the feed back guys.

My intentions are to dive at least once a month.
Normal visibility for my area is 10-30 metres

Won't be used necessarily on night dives but I want to eventually be qualified to penetrate wrecks.

I'm not a millionaire but I don't mind buying decent gear.

What sort of lighting specs are the norm ie lumens, coverage etc

+1 for Light & Motion!

Great quality housings, built in filter, easy push button controls on the handle, monitor on the back insures a great shot! I still have one (bought in 2000) that I use for training, it's been all over the world with me.

The NEW Sola 1200 lights are great! Good price point, bright, small compact, rechargeable, can be used as a can light (hand mount, w/no cord or canister) on a night or day dive.

Let me know if you need any help with this, we ship world wide!

So have you bought the camcorder yet? Is it the Canon HFS-21???
I would not recommend the Ikelite housing for that particular camcorder. The reason is that it is necessary to use the exterior mirror to see the screen with that one, so your image is going to be backwards. That would drive me crazy. (My camcorder has the screen open inside the housing so I can see it there, no mirror and no reversal.)

Hi Robin,

Yes I already have the video camera.
I bought it back in about April for filming on land.

You are right. It would drive me crazy too, so that one is out.

Cheers
Brendan

You might check out Backscatter.com. Great customer service. I have the Gates but the white balance is a bit of a hassle so far. I use the Fisheye FIX LED 1000 DX Video and Focus light - nice adjustments.

ive been thinking of getting a hfs21 and a gates....why do you say the white balance is a hassle? would it be easier on the light and motion housing?
