I have just got my G9 and have not got it wet yet. Playing around the other night, I tried a movie in compact mode - no zoom. This surprised me as even my little 950ixus IS has zoom while recording.

I looked up the manual and on page 102:
The digital zoom can be used while shooting in this mode (standard)

I tried recording a movie in Standard mode and could use the digital zoom.

The digital zoom doesn't seem to work on High Res mode either.

The only thing you need to be aware of with regards digital zoom, is that it works primarily by enlarging the pixels rather than enlarging the actual view (as per optical zoom), and as such it has a tendency to lose its clarity and becomes pixelated/blocky very quickly.

I just picked up my G9 after reading this thread... while in movie mode I was able to zoom in and out while filming. I played back the clip and it definately zoomed in and out.. so.. you can do it.
