I'm putting to gether a new underwater camera rig. (G-10,Ikelite housing,DS-51 strobe) In the past I have used manual settings (F5.6-1/125) to override any available light which tints the photo's green or blue at shallow depths. I have noticed that the G10 doesn't operate TLL flash metering on manual. Any experienced G10 users have suggestions on alternate settings for exposure, so that available light doesn't tint the photo's?

I have the same setup as you Duke. First I started with using Aperture priority and TTL mode on the strobe, but found it finicky. A lot of the super close macro shots or semi-wide angle shots would turn out under or over exposed. Since then, I've switched completely over to using full manual on the camera and strobe. I find using manual settings to be much more consistent in creating proper exposure. When using only available light, I use manual white balance to correct the "tint". In post-processing I'll run the image through photoshop to correct any further color issues. I've noticed that white balancing is not needed much in the shallows, but if using F5.6-1/125 has worked for you in the past then why not use full manual when needed?

Duke--Welcome to SB. Question. When you say "I have used manual settings (F5.6-1/125) to override any available light" you are simply trying to darken the background to reduce noticeable color shift, yes? If so, shoot in Manual as FrankP suggests and crank the shutter speed up (I'm typically above 1/1000th of a sec. for this reason--but I don't shoot a DS-51). Better a blacker background than a distracting one. It's a nice advantage of manual over a TTL approach--you get to determine how you want to have things turn out. Unlike a lot of p&s cameras the G-10 is very convenient to shoot in Manual. // ww
