Ok, I think I'm possibly asking a question that has been answered in various ways previously. If so, apologies - I'm really struggling to get my head around this and need a simple set of answers.

I have:

Canon G10
Canon DC-28 housing
(have used those two together to really good effect, but wanted a strobe to step it up a level)
Brand new Sea&Sea YS-110a strobe

What I don't have is any housing masks, optic cables etc.

What I'd like is....well, the optic cables, masking etc needed to make it all sing sweetly together!

Can someone explain to me, in the most simple of terms, what I need to get in terms of optic cable that will fit into my strobe, and what I need to get that will allow me to affix that cabling to the front of my housing? Happy to do a certain amount of DIY if it is very much cheaper.

Oh, one more thing - and I know this is getting kinda picky.... is it possible to have the housing mount removable so that if I don't want the encumbrance of the strobe I can go without, but still use the in-built flash? If not, no problems.

Thank you eternally!

You would just get the mask kit and and stick the velcro hook tape in the perimeter of the internal flash and cut the velcro mask's fabric and position it so that the fiber optic adapter in the middle of velcro mask faces right in the front of the internal flash. Then attach the fiber optic cable to that adapter in one and and to the external strobe in the other end.

If you want to have the option of using the built in flash, you then should stick the hook part of the velcro on the housing in such a way that they don't block the internal flash's path. I wanted to use the internal flash once, but I put the velcro hook tape all over the housing, so when I pull the velcro mask off, much of the flash are still blocked.

Hi,

I am using a similar setup (G10+DC-28 + YS110a strobe). I got one of the standard cable optics (I think it was 10bar) with the strobe, and used. It was flimsy and in a short time started giving me problems. I solved these by buying a optic cable used for stereo system. It was much thicker, had better light transmission and more durable. The connection on the YS110a side was easy (the cable plugged into the hole in the strobe). Connecting on the housing side was harder. I ended up molding a piece of plastic to hold it in place by velcro. There might be easier solutions out there (the sea&sea cable does come with a solution for the housing side that seems better). I also took the time to "blacken" the interior of the housing to make sure that flash light does not leak from anywhere, except where I want it (using black tape).

I hope this helps. I found this setup quite good. My only complain is that the G10 does not do TTL in manual mode. Otherwise, I shot either in Av/S mode and set the strobe on TTL mode, or work completely manual (setting the camera flash to minimal, the strobe to Manual2 and playing with the strobe intensity).

Cheers,

-Nir
