I used manual focus with this lens quite often with my old camera (a 20D). Especially in low light, it didn't want to autofocus very repeatably.

I primarily used this lens to shoot supermacro > 1:1 with a woody's diopter; on little stuff like small shrimp/crab etc. I found it most useful to just dial the lens to full magnification (closest focus) - and then move the camera in and out to achieve final focus.

I do the same w/my 30D, works like a charm.
I just ordered an SLX focus light though, I'll try Autofocus again once it arrives.

One quirk with my port though, I had to add an extra rubber piece to make the action smoother as I focus in and out. I just used one of the extras from my 8" Dome. No problems since this mod.
