Since the Canon case that I have does not have a lens cap, I'm starting to worry a bit about it getting scratched.
Lots of times while diving, particularly on entry/exit, I'll have the case clipped off and I'm worried that it could bump into something, or something into it. The case is already showing some scratches and dings, but thankfully not the lens... yet.

What do you do to protect the case lens while in the water? Is there a cap that we can get? or maybe make a DIY something or other? any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for you tips n hints! :coffee:

King,

I pray that your moniker references Mushroom soup as the other mushroom loophole is now closed. Having said that, dunno what Cannon you have but my Powershot has suffered no damage to the lense in the last 3 years going cap-less. I have performed multiple face plants at IOP and numerous endos at the Futo entry and I can assure you the Cannon has fared far better than my limbs. How about the lid from a can of Chipstar or Pringles ? Or perhaps something rigged from the trusty 100 shop.

two weeks ago the ocean spat me out at IOP - I punctured my drysuit!! so far the case is ok...

I was thinking of a piece of rubber like an old bike tire or something...

p.s. the mushroom is more of a nintendo reference... ;-)

Sorry for bringing up an old post but +1 for Nintendo Reference!!!

Mario FTW!

MK, did you ever get any idea of what to do to cover your lens port? I have a similar concern, and I've been trying to find something also - I'm amazed that there isn't something sold with the case.:confused:

Someone on another board suggested cutting down a neoprene beer sleeve/cozy, and that might work, but I don't have one handy, and my guess is that the inside diameter of the cozy is too large to make a good fit (I don't think the port is as big as a beercan, though its being somewhat rectangular may distort my perceptions.)

Anybody else have an idea about this?

nothing yet. I've been doing mostly training dives lately and havent been using my camera. But once I get the holidays out of the way, I'm going to do some experimenting I think....

My reservations about the beer cozy idea were all wrong. It works like a charm. Cut two inches off the top of the sleeve, and it looks like Canon made it. Cheap, easy, pretty bulletproof-looking, and a piece of cake to replace if it gets lost!

Unfortunately, my beer is now warm...:coke:

HI;

A scratch is actually not an issue underwater, as it fills up with...water; and you don't see it really. So some hard cover would just be good enough from keeping a severe bump off the glass. Only a real hard hit could break the glass I would think.
