I'm beginning to feel sick..tired of deciding which camera to go for. Wake up one morning think i would go for SD500 which is ultra compact. Then wake up next day think i would go for S70 for the manual settings (which is useful underwater). Then why not A95 as the price differs so much. :06:
Anyone could calm me down?

I don't know if this will help you, but make a list of the features without the model numbers or prices. Then look at the features and see if anything seems to fit your needs better than the others.

THAT is the camera you should buy. If price is a consideration, then determine exactly what you're willing to sacrifice in features for the money.

It's not easy to choose in the photo market due to the plethora of models and brands available; but if you look at what you need, then what you want in a camera it makes it easier.

Definitely make a list of what is important to you and go from there. You can compare models side by side www.dpreview.com

For me I'd have to have full manual control available in the housing, so any camera that didn't have it would immediately be tossed from the list.

Then I'd look for the widest possible lens and the closest possible focus distance and the price. It would be a balance of those. If I could save some cash and get almost the features I wanted, I'd go that way. More money for diving!

Don't forget two sets of rechargeables and at least one memory card - 512 or higher IMHO.

I'd say the A95. It has a nice feel, and if you're diving where gloves are needed, the smaller housings might be harder to handle.

Of all the cameras you mention, it is also the one with the most flexibility.

HTH,

What you need is a 3-sided coin. Flip it, and buy whatever it lands on. Better, use a dice (six-sided). 1 & 2, the SD500. 3 & 4, the S70. 5 & 6, the A95 (now A510, I think).

Now, if it selects, say the SD500, and you say to yourself "oh, no", you've just learned something: You really prefer the S70 or A95. If not, then, go with the dice.

(I hope that decision-making scenario made sense!)

Don't listen to me too much, as I've only taken my camera down a few times.

But, why not also consider an S60 or S50 if you can still find them, instead of the s70. They will be much cheaper than the s70, but still have all the useful features. This way you don't have to fret about the price so much. Anyways, the 5MP of the S50 would put it on par with the A95.

I have an old s30, but I love the RAW mode. I'm new, so perhaps it's just my bad photo-taking abilities, but I get a _lot_ out of RAW mode. The only thing I don't like about the S series is the proprietary battery -- which is less of a concern thanks to e-bay.

The A95 and A510 are *NOT* the same thing.

The A95 is still made, and in fact, has only been out for about six months. IMHO, it is the best camera Canon makes, short of SLR.

Having shot almost 3000 underwater images this past year with my s50... I'd go with the s70 in a heartbeat. That being said, the a95 is less expensive, and uses AA's rather than a dedicated battery. Both points are worthy of consideration.

The s70, on the other hand, offers RAW image capture, a 7MP CCD, and full manual capabilities. Are those features worth the additional cash outlay TO YOU? To a digital SLR user, the shutter lag will prove to be more than a little frustrating... so you should also consider the option of housing (and insuring) your SLR.

Good luck with your decision.
