I have the Canon A620 and the canon housing. I took some picture on land and I love the qualitiy of the pictures. I am going to take the camera under water soon and i want to buy me a strobe. What strobe would go well with the A620? I saw the sealife sl960D is going for 250 or so. Is it any good?

I read something about a preflash setting on the digicam is important! But I think there is no such setting on the A620! Do I really need it?

There are a ton of strobes out there that will "work" with your system. You're going to need to decide on a budget and which features are most important to what you want to achieve.

A great place to start once you've cruised around here (there's been a lot of strobe talk here during the present giving season!) is www.digitaldiver.net -> Strobe finder. Excellent information on all manner of strobes.

My personal choice is the Inon range. I have the now discontinued 220s strobe and will likely be adding another as I really do love it. For me, manual strobe control is a must. TTL, for me, is not. TTL is basically letting the strobe read from the camera/scene what power output you need - it can work very well in some situations.

Good luck shopping!

I second the inon strobes. A friend of mine lent me the z220 which has no automatic metering. Using this strobe would be my first time using a strobe and I found it pretty straight forward when it came to adjusting the flash intensity. The strobe which has replaced the z220 is the d2000 which has metering built in which can be nice for novices, and I believe it also has a built in focusing light.

Just as a sidenote regarding Inon strobes and the canon housing. Inon does not currently make an adapter for the housing so you'll have to fashion some way of attaching the fiber optic cord so it can be triggered by the camera's flash.

By the way. I am not affiliated with that company. They are just a company I found in my area. And one of the guys there has let me demo some of the strobes.

This system doesn't work with the WP-DC90 housing for the Canon A620/610. It works with the WP-DC40.

I contacted Inon and asked if they will come up with something for the A620, that was the reply:

Thanks for the inquiry.

Our new mount bases will be announced in Feb. at the Japanese Dive Festival. We will not know until then.

Thank you,

I'm sorry, I'm participating in another thread with the s70 and the wp-dc40 which is the setup I'm using.

In any event, I'm kind of surprised they don't have a similar setup.

You might try asking Ryan at reefphotovideo.com. He's been lending me the housing along with the tray, arm and strobe. He might be able to give you a suggestion for your camera and housing. I've been diving with him a couple of times and usually ask him a ton of questions most of which he answers in a manner that almost goes over my head. He's a member of SB but visits infrequently. He participates more on wetpixel.com and digitaldivers.net
