Have a cannon sd800. Am I better getting an underwater case for $160 or just a specialized underwater camera for $300?

I have a Canon A620, and use the Canon housing for the past two years and it's been working great. I change the O-Ring annually ($13 from Canon). I'll update, if and when it dies with the newer technology. Spend the money on a good strobe, as it will move to most camera's you choose. Have fun!

Stick with the Canon. You'll have the movie mode and enjoy the fab topside pics as well as u/w. It's more versitile than just a specialized camera. I have the SD 900 and I am very pleased with the performance both under and out of water. Just make sure that you read the manual for underwater usage thoroughly for both the camera and the case. Be meticulous about cleaning and lubricating the o-ring.
Have fun!

I'm with them. Get the Canon case and spend the extra money on a strobe. The canon cases are fine - I've got the SD700 case and a couple of S1 IS cases and they're fine as long as you don't commit user error.

Where can I find a decent strobe. Whats the price on them
For a "decent" strobe? Plan on spending at least $500, maybe more.

Couldn't have stated this better. I got lazy while in Kona, and did not clean the grove where the O-ring sits (salt crystals), and had a partial flood during our Manta night dive. So, clean, clean, and clean again. BTW, got lucky and saved the camera, just lost the batteries, but still had to rinse the camera and took a few days to dry out.

For the strobes, check out B&H Photo at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ they carry many of the popular strobes & accessories around at excellent prices. My son and I use Sea&Sea and are very pleased.

I apologize if I am off topic but is the canon under water case for the SD700 able to support a color correct filter? Or is it not necessary?
thank you
Bob
