hey Northeastwrecks - in the "Wearin' o' the Canister" Poll you mentioned wearing it on your left hand...

I think I may have asked about this once before - and I haven't dug into the archives so let the clubbing commence if this has been discussed to death earlier.

I finally caved (no pun intended...although...) and bought a 10w HID. It'll be here tomorrow, and make its maiden voyage Sunday. I couldn't be more fired up. But I've never even seen one before, let alone donned and used one...so I'm a complete canister newbie. A little nervous about it, but surely excited.

Fundys book - its on the left, its on the right...what's the deal?

* I Don't Scooter

* I can see a Lefty advantage, so you don't blind someone when passing the long hose....but with a palm-forward posture, doesn't the light shine UP (from the Goodman handle) and not towards the recipient when passing with the right hand?

* Why do I want the cord passing acoss my chest - where my drysuit hose and long hose already reside (sort of)? Doesn't it make sense to keep it all on the right?

* Clips to right D ring when not in use - I got that - just like my long hose reg.

* If you're O-Ring, you have fins (and maybe a rudder) and running lights attached to that silo to assist with safety trim. My canister is in human porportions, so this won''t be an issue.

Any tips or help for this first time user will be sincerely appreciated.

Wear the can on your right side, hold the light head primarily in your left hand. It goes under the long hose.

We do it that way for the reasons you mentioned (scootering, blinding buddy), you should do the same for standardization if nothing else. Someday you may scooter :)

Pug and I had a nice discussion on left vs right. I prefer using the right hand to hold the light. It has it's drawbacks...maybe...but they can be overcome. It comes down to whatever works best for you.
Have fun with the light, and remember they are different than a regular bulb.

Put the canister on the right side, with the cord going under your long hose. Then, if you ever do stages, or get a scooter, you won't have to relearn anything. It's all about muscle memory, knowing where stuff is in the dark, without even looking. Standardization also means that other divers (adhering to DIR stds) will know what's going on with your kit, you will have a setup that is familiar to them, not a "what the F### is this??" I often shift the light from my left to right hand, sometimes I hold it with both hands, but the battery pack is on the right side.

...why don't you send it to me and I will send you the silo until you get squared away. Just send a flatbed truck or a C-130 to pick it up...

O-ring once bubbled...

Depending on where you live, O-rings light might qualify as a second home, then you could write it off!! Sounds like a deal!!
