Looking to buy a canister light 18 W HID or so. Need min 4 hours burn time. Major investment, gotta make the right choice (use: occasional cave diving, frequent Ontario wreck diving) Suggestions... ?

Halcyon seems most reliable quality/after sale service; Salvo good quality/price; OMS most durable

Did not find much about Dive Rite though... Any thoughts/comments ?
Much appreciate your input.

Where did you hear get this info at? OMS most durable? You can use a Salvo as a hammer. :D

(I own a Halcyon....but will own a Salvo soon!)

OMS are bullet-proof and small! Perfect combo. Dislike lights that use simple lid clamps to seal the canister - can be accident and flood prone -- so for me the Halcyon/Salvo/DR lights are out.

I use a 24W Metalsub light now, 9Amh battery with the burn time you require. 1 year warranty. Might want to give them a try as well. (see http://www.metalsub-usa.com/ for a "local" dealer)

Side by side comparisons of the Halcyon 18W and Salvo 18W:
Halcyon uses a Welch Allen bulb. Warmer color temp - brownish light.
Salvo uses the Bright Star bulb. Cooler coler temp - blueish light. Less expensive to replace.

To my eye the Bright star bulb is the better choice as it seems to cut through the murk a touch better.

Yes I'm biased as I own a Salvo, but my comparisons have been done with buddies who own the Halcyon. Keep in mind I could have bought either light and still chose Salvo.

Halcyon is decidedly NOT the most reliable ... most of my friends with Halcyon lights keep a spare canister light handy for when their H light has to go back to the shop. Granted, Halcyon usually turns them around reasonably quick, and is pretty good about covering repairs via warranty ... but the fact remains that more often than not, you can expect your H light to be returned multiple times. FWIW - my Helios 9 was, by a wide margin, the most unreliable HID light I've ever owned ... which is why I no longer own it.

Salvo lights are far more reliable and durable ... not to mention less expensive (small wonder H is trying so hard to put the guy out of business).

Thanks for all your input - most helpful. Leaning towards Salvo now.

Interesting Web site update...
I checked Salvo's web site earlier today (and copied the info onto notepad) where they gave details about the 9 ah 18 W.
I looked again tonight and it seems that major enough changes are taking place...from 18 W to 21 W !? latest, newest ?

this morning ...
9 Amp NIMH 18 Watt HID Focusable Light
-18 Watt HID with 1300 Lumen Output @ 7000 Kelvin
this evening...
9 Amp NIMH 21 Watt HID Focusable Light
-18 Watt HID with 1500 Lumen Output @ 6500 Kelvin

Price is the same... I guess they are in the process of upgrading their models... ?! :giveusahu

Price is the same for the 9A NiMH 18/21W focusable as many of the components are the same (battery, cord, canister, including same bulb) - difference is in the canister lid, ballast/burn time. Salvo now have six new Li-Ion 21W lights also...

Hi Luci,

The 18w 9A and the 21w 9A have been available for quite awhile. You might have missed it when you were first looking. As to the prices, this question gets asked almost every week at our store. The reason the prices are the same is due to the fact that the manufacturing and part costs are pretty much the same for both models. I'm sure some people would pay more for a 21W vs 18W, but its not necessary.

thank you very much for that explanation double80s

i am curious about Li-Ion... lighter battery pack, seems to be the same output, longer burn time... sounds better than the NIMH ? is it really ?
