Have a friend heading to Cancun. Anyone know good dive operations there or does he need to basically head to Cozumel?

I was there about 1 year ago (13 months) and went through Scuba Cancun (see: www.scubacancun.com.mx). Did a refresher "course" through them and then a 1 tank reef and then 2 tanks in Cozumel. The 'course' was not a course at all. Basically we were outfitted with gear and shown the pool. We set up our own stuff and got into the pool. Mind you, it has only been 3 years but I was pretty unimpressed by the course itself. The dive in Cancun was great, albeit over-dived and we were just 'led' around.

The next day, we were picked up at our hotel in a bus that went to Playa del Carmen, to the ferry then to Cozumel. We got 2 dives in, lunch and then back to the hotel. My husband and I both agreed that if we were to go again, we would definitely just stay in Playa or Cozumel. Preferably the latter.

There is good diving off of Cancun even if I've never done it! :blinking:

The reefs are not as dramatic vs. Coz, and most divers feel that Coz provides a much better experience. I can't recommend a DiveOp in Cancun, but I can out of Playa.

HERE is the website for Dive Mike.

My good buddy used DiveMike for both diving out of Playa, and in the Cenotes. He had nothing but good things to say out this op. The boats are smallish which most think is a good thing over there, but some people have issues with smallish boats.

You can read Dimitri's old trip report in the thread below. Keep in mind it's a very old thread. http://www.scubaboard.com/showthread.php?p=1173034#post1173034

I just got back from Cancun and did 6 dives with Manta Divers. Manta Divers runs a pretty good operation and I was very happy with their service. For $225, you can do 2 local reefs, 2 Cozumel and 2 Cenotes dives. The other Cancun dive shop I hear in SB getting mentioned a lot is Mayan Aqua Dive, I've never done business with them.
Hope this helps.

Contact Ben at benrmooney@yahoo.co.uk. He operates Mayan Aqua Dives www.mayanaquadives.com. His boat and is on the north shore out of Hotel Internationale de Cancun. He has great rates and packages. He can also arrange transportation to and from the hotel.

You will not regret the trip. Diving is very nice off Cancun. Ben will not take you to the trashed reefs.

I will be leaving on Aug 25 for a week in Cancun. We diving with Ben and doing a whale shark trip among other things!

Hope they have great weather and a good time!

I'll second that! Manta Divers was great, and ya gotta do the cenote dives! :D

Manta Divers. Make sure you do the "Felipe Xicotencatl" wreck...

Cheers.

I too cast my vote for Mayan Aqua Dive
http://mayanaquadive.com/cancun-most-professional-dive-experience/
I dove with them this past March, and had a great time.
We had 4 divers and 3 discovery divers for one of the dives, and now we will soon have 2 more certified divers in our group.
