I,m flying into Cancun and staying in Cozumel. How hard is it, and what's involved in getting from Cancun to Cozumel? Any help greatly appreciated... Thanks

At the Cancun airport, take the bus to Playa del Carmen. Once in Playa del Carmen, take the ferry to Cozumel. For future trips to Cozumel, it will be well worth any added cost to fly directly into Cozumel. You can search the Cozumel forum here to get more specific details on the Cancun to Cozumel trip, such as time, bus and ferry fees, etc. In 2005, my wife and I did the Cancun route to Cozumel. It was our first and last time doing that.

That's not necessarily true. Cancun is a much bigger market, and depending on where you are coming from, when you are traveling, what special fares are running, etc., flying into Cancun might be significantly cheaper. The dates I am looking at right now, with consideration to my budget, flying into Cancun looks like it will enable me to stay on Cozumel 3 or 4 more days.

The transfer's very easy and the bus & ferry schedules match well; however, if you're flying home from Cancun try to reserve a 2pm or later flight so you won't have to leave Coz first thing in the morning. A noon return would mean you'd have to catch the 8am ferry at the very latest (there's also a 6am) to catch the 9am bus to arrive at the airport around 10. You get the idea...

Thanks everyone.... a great help... especially Parrotheaddiver .... Ron Lee
Greatly Appreciated...

It's really not bad, actually the ferry can be kind of pleasant. Last time I forgot about booking a later departure and ended up taking the 5AM ferry, ughh. To make matters worse, I had to walk most of the way to the ferry terminal from right near Casa Del Mar, because there are almost no taxis at 4:30 AM.

Still, the airfare difference can be in the hundreds, and usually it adds 2-3 hours to your trip, to me that's worth it.

matt- to avoid that i usually stay a night or 2 in play on the way back. fun town.
btw does anyone have an idea of how long it takes to get fr plane to immigration, to luggage and through cutoms? i am guessing it took about an hour last may. this year i have 44 min to catch the 10:30 a.m. bus otherwise i have to break down a pay for a collectivo.

Did it today. Landed at Cancun around 10:45, was thru customs, collected our bags. In the taxi/van by 11:20. (the are 5 in our group). Was at Playa Del Carmen by 12:20. Caught the 1:00 ferry. At Scuba Club by 2:00. Got hear quicker than the connecting flights would have done. one point. Was told to arrive at Cancun 3 hours before the return flight. Not sure they move that slow. Ferry was a bit rough today, otherwise, not a bad trip

We just did the bus route from Cancun to Cozumel for the first time last week and it is really simple. Here's a good write-up on Aldora Divers website explaining the details:

How to get to Cozumel

The buses are comfortable with TV's and assigned seats. For the difference in flight costs it's definitely worth it.
