Cancun diving is ok/not very good. Cozumel is the better choice by far! Cancun diving is done close to Cancun, never seen a dive boat go all the way over to Cozumel. Go to Cozumel and enjoy the great diving instead....

Don't bother with diving in Cancun. There is really nothing to see, and the water conditions can be pretty rough. We dove there a few years ago and the waves were so rough it took over 45 minutes on the surface and waving my yellow fin in the air, before the boat saw us. Of course, after that experience, we bought safety sausages, but I won't waste time/money diving in Cancun again.

Cozumel is much better. But it does require a taxi ride to Playa del Carmen where you take the ferry over to Cozumel. Believe me, it is worth the time involved to get to Cozumel.

And if you want something a little different, head south & dive the cenotes. An image search will get you pictures. I dove dos ojos.

If you happen to be staying in Cancun, dive with Scuba Cancun. They not only do dives locally (not too bad, but Coz is better), but they do trips to Cozumel as well as the cenotes. They're a class act and I highly recommend them.

Dive the cenotes, not to be missed. Learn to love the ferry to Coz.

Simple, take the time and go to Cozumel. However if you do go be advised that to dive there you do have to pay the park fee, which I have no problem with. I just bites when the dive opporator you go through forgets to tell you this and you find out on the dive boat with no wallet.

I dove in Cancun back in February and while I perfer Coz the diving in Cancun was good. Like someone else said earlier the conditions tend to be rougher (we dove in 6 ft waves one day) and the reefs are smaller with less life on them. Water temps were in the upper 70's. The depths stay pretty constant and there are no walls. We did one dive on the C-55 (wreck) and it got pretty much destroyed by the hurricane (just a big pile of steel). We used Nautilus Divers and were happy with the service. We also dove the cenotas (first time) and while they were interesting I perfer reefs over rocks. The water was crystal clear (except the haloclines) and a little cool (70).

Diving in Cancun is fairly good. Most of the dive sites, at least the better ones, are out towards Isla Mujeres. I have never heard of a boat going from Cancun to Cozumel, although Tank Ha in Playa del Carmen makes the crossing from Playa. As others have said, the reef structures don't equal Cozumel (but then, few do), but there is a lot of marine life. You will probably see big schools of grunts and snappers, all the usual reef fish, some smallish spotted morays, lobsters, and maybe even a turtle. Because it is exposed to the wind, the water can get rough, and you are generally diving in surge. Once you get used to rocking back and forth in the surge, it's not bad. If it's windy enough, the port closes. Cozumel diving would be better, but it pretty much takes all day to go to Coz and come back for a two-tank dive. It might be a good option for one day of a vacation in Cancun, but it would be pretty tiring to make the trip every day.
