I'm planning to dive dry in winter. Water is about 35 degrees. Will wearing a jacket underneath the drysuit work or do i have to buy a proper undergarment?

You can wear “non-dive specific” undergarments. I would be a little worried about an actual jacket interfering with your wrist seals and neck seal, but I have used a wool skiing sweater and merino skiing baselayer and they worked fine.

Forget this idea. 35degrees is serious business. You can't half arse this. Get a proper undergarment or skip the dive.

I had a friend die in part because they didn't have suitable gear in seriously cold water.

In principle you could, assuming it can provide enough insulation (highly improbable), but be careful with things like zippers, rings, grommets and other hard accessories usually fount on topside clothing. They get very uncomfortable underwater once squeezed by the hydrostatic pressure.

With the jacket and your horizontal trim, What will you wear for pants?

I'm so sorry to hear that. Did your friend died due to the lack of undergarments? Is there any economical undergarment options that you would recommend?

Define “work.” In other words keep you warm if the suit doesn’t leak or if it does? A good dry suit undergarment will wet, at least for the time it takes to get out of an NDL dive. My other question is does not using a proper undergarment mean you’re also not using dry gloves? If so, at 35 degrees your hands will be pretty useless in about 15-20 minutes. Wet gloves lose insulation with depth. How safe is that? The next thing to go will be judgement. Cold makes you stupid(er)/sloppy(er). 35 degrees is nothing to take lightly. If you want to try it, leave yourself outs.

Near as I can tell, "good" and "economical" do not meet in the world of dry suit undergarments. I have a Weezle Extreme and love it, but there could be better stuff out there now that's washable like the Weezle.
