can i get my open water dive on a cruise?

i will get my 3 day class for my cirtification class this week. i am going on a cruise in january. i will be in mazatlan mexico on jan 12, 2007. can i get my openwater dive for the rest of my cirtification in mazatlan?

Welcome to the ScubaBoard! You will need to get a referral packet from your LDs to take with you. They maybe able to help you locate a reputable dive operation in Mazatlan to do your OW class with. You might check the forums for Mazatlan and see what others have to say about dive operations in the area too!

That sounds like a toughie -- good luck! At least with one agency, I believe the 4 OW dives for cert are required to be split over two calendar days -- no idea about the other agencies.

You can also check with the cruise line you are going on. Some offer certifications on the boat with you open water dives done as excursions. Or you can do the referral and book your diving through a shop, check with your local dive shop about a referral program.

Many cruise lines offer complete open water classes. I have a friend who did his OW on Royal Caribbean this year.

you might be able to, might, but that would be dependent on finding 2 different instructors willing to only do half (4 dives required). And I bet they would charge you $$$$.
You really should be in one place and get the dives done over 2 days by ONE instructor....

Mark & Tim have already given you good advice. I'd like to have my OW already so I could enjoy just diving, but whatever....

I am doing my 4 open water dives through Princess Cruises in March. I do the classwork here in VA, and then I arranged the dives through the cruise line. They have an instructor on board. I beleive the program is called New Wave Scuba.

Basically, I'll do 2 dives in one port, and then the last two in another port.
