Any reg made by scubapro is most assuredly NOT cheap! Neither are they low quality. With a brand like them, your essentially comparing various models of Mercedes. Even the "lowly" Mk2-R190 combo rates well against the competition; that's what I dive and have never had a good reason to upgrade.
 
I am very new to diving, but it seems to me that if there was one piece of equipment that you wouldn't want to skimp on, that would be the reg, since it is basically the only keeping you alive under water.

Regs are one thing that you don't want to be cheap about. The extra cash you spend for a nicer reg will be worth it. If you take good care of a reg, it will pretty much last forever. Look at is as a long term investment towards your diving enjoyment.
And safety too if you are planning to go down to 100ft. in unknown waters.
